There has been a sale of bike clothing/parts in September at Meadowbank for at least the last two years. Anyone heard if it is to take place this year? Usually get an e-mail or see poster at work but nothing so far.

    Sunday 26th September

I went last year out of curiosity and didn't think things were particularly 'bargains'.

But the fact that they keep coming back suggests that there must be some people who think they are worth buying from.

It might be out of the back of a lorry (then taken inside!) - but not 'dodgy'!

One of the cheap supermarkets has bike stuff in tomorrow apparently, can't remember if its Aldi or Lidil though.

I'm resisiting the temptation to get all bike snob about the Aldi gear*. However the word on bikeradar is the "merino" baselayer is only 30% merino. The overshoes look like the crummy dhb ones that don't fit, leak and fall apart after a week in the rain and the pump looks frightyully similar to the EBC one sold for road tyres that won't get past 100psi and takes great pleasure in chewing valves to pieces... Like the Tesco range, you get what you pay for. I'm sure there will be some hidden gems in there for someone...

    * on second thoughts, maybe I didn't?

Dunno a spare microfibre towel would be handy and the longs might be ok. Have to wait till i can get a look.

    £15 for a 30% Merino Aldi top.
£25 for a 100% Merino Icebreaker Oasis top at Blacks

    30% Merino = 70% not Merino = 100% pointless.

    Nuff said.

Great, thanks for the replies. Previously I have bought "consumables" lubes, tubes etc. Looking to get extra lights and deck myself out like a mobile christmas tree for this winter.

    £15 for a 30% Merino Aldi top.

Cheap maybe but at what price? I'd rather buy a quality product with known credentials.

    Cheap maybe

or merino-for-merino, more expensive than the quality product.

Just happened to be beside the Musselburgh Aldi this morning so I thought I'd pop in. There was a clamour of folk around the goodies, couldn't be bothered elbowing in, so came back later when it was a bit quiet.

Was almost tempted by the bib tights as an extra pair for winter, but they just seemed a bit thin as did the pad. Merino top looked meh up close.

I had intended on getting a microfibre towel but they were just polyester sheets spun to look like a real towel so not really microfibre at all.

A mate gave me a pair of the Lidl gloves the other day as they were too big for him. The lasted 1 day before the stitching came out.

But on the other hand(!) I've been using a pair of Lidl/Aldi (can't remember which...) gloves for a couple of winters and they're pretty much as good as new.

I generally think that for what you pay, it's not bad.

And they have some real bargains such as my Altimeter watch which I got for £25. Lidl were doing them for £20 a few weeks ago, but you've got to move really fast to get one of them.

Thanks for the tip. I'll be in Scotland (moving back up next weekend) and I recall shopping at Meddowbank over 5 years ago at one of these events. Infact sorting out 'stuff' in a couple of boxes in my garage proir to our move north, I found a carrier bag with a few bits and bobs I bought at the event, still in their bag. Just goes to show how long its taken me to empty boxes i moved down in 5 years ago. Now I'm moving back to Edinburgh I hope I'll not have boxes unpacked for the next 5 years!!!....

I got the lidl bike computer as well and it lasted a few months the just died.... replaced the batteries but nothing. Thing is it wasn't even that cheap £25. Then I went and bought the £6 computer from tesco and it's been great. Still going after a year......I dunno it makes no sense.

I had an £7 Argos wireless cycle computer that did the biz just fine for years on my various student days bargain basement MTBs. Transferred it to the Road Bike and it carried on going, but Pedal Power in West Calder binned when they replaced my fork :(

An argos multi-tool has stood the test of time far better than the expensive Lifu one which is slowly rusting itself apart, despite copious treatments with WD40, oil and grease and keeping it stored in a rag and a waterproof bag...

I've got a £6-ish Tesco bike computer on my Birdy and it has been really good, it a little in the large side.

Popped into Aldi at lunch time and have to agree with the comments above re. the merino wool top and the towel. The former looked more like an old man's cardigan.

LIDL - socks good (£2.50) dry quickly and haven't worn out, helmets good £9 [obviously, only if you are in to that sort of thing], ladies capri shorts £9 look ok on the rare occasions my partner ventures forth. Everything else - gash. I love LIDL bargains, and when you get home and think about it, they let you take them back and swap them for groceries.
