I visited Planet X in South Clerk Street for the first time today. I got a rear light, inner tubes and a couple of bottle cages for about half of what they cost in other bike shops - almost Aldi priced. I noticed their bib-shorts were also cheaper. The cheapest seemed to lack leg grippers. Has anyone bought them? Are they any good?

I have a pair of their bib shorts (the more expensive ones) They're the same chamois and padding as that which appears inside the louis garnaeu stuff you get for 100£ at evans.
They're a bit weirdly shaped but comfortable enough. Lasted around 4 months of hard riding and regular washes.

I've had a bunch of stuff from Planet X and it's become my favourite bike shop. Online prices in a real shop full of real cyclists...and no attitude.
Sizing can be a little...eccentric. I'd read the feedback on their items before buying - not because their stuff's duff, but just to get a better sense of sizes.
I've also found their innertubes to be a total steal. Their components are good too. I have an PX saddle and stem on my bike and they're excellent.
Watch out for their regular discount codes.

From another forum . . .
"Anybody shopping through planetx.co.uk, using the code ukstaffjcd20 at checkout gets you 20% off purchases until 2nd December...They are been allowed to share their discount with non staff until 2nd December. The code won't work after that. It's all legit."
It works, used it myself 23rd November.

Is the kaffenback any good?

I like mine, fair to say it's heavy, but the legs soon adjust. It is very comfortable.

I didn't notice any massive difference between my Revolution Continental (L) and an old-style (non-exclusively-disc) Kaff (XL, but barely bigger than the Revolution) by the time all the things were attached, but the build period had been spent using the drainpipey sparebike (including 35mm tyres and a front porteur rack) so I couldn't really compare them directly. Apart from some expected faff with the rear mudguard and rear brake I am still most pleased with it. I occasionally clunk my heels against the chainstays but have no complaints.

I really like the kaffenback frame, but if you go disc you will need to be careful about choosing racks and mudguards to give clearance for a calliper - Baldcyclist no doubt has the solution but when I looked it seems the only rack and mudguard option would be to use a fairly wide spacer.
In reverse to wingpig, just for the frame I bought a cheap second hand (disc braked) Revolution Country Explorer (same as the Roux Etape frame) which has different option for panniers/mudguards which I preferred as I didn't need spacers - I just had to make my own mudguard stays.

Topeak Super Tourist DX F/Disc Rear Rack will fit, or I have Tortec Transalp rack for £20.
I did have to buy a new rack for it as my previous 'disc' rack didn't fit it.
Other things to note, spec says clearance for 32mm tyres. With mudguards it will only take 28mm. I have 28mm M+'s on, and they look massive in the frame.
The rear mudguard was a bit of a pain to put on, the bracket wouldn't bend to fit the lug, which is at the bottom, rather than the side of the wee crossbar thingmy. I just drilled a hole, and screw straight through the mudgaurd and done away with the bracket, still seems fine.
Other bodge that was required was there is no hole in the front of the fork to mount a dynamo light. I just made a hole, fork is still in one piece so seems to be fine, most likely invalidated any warranty on it though....
One minor annoyance, is that toe occasionally catches on front mudguard.
I even like the beige'ness of mine :)
