Looks (from Farcebook) like someone has been stringing up rope across the Clydeside cycle path in the dark to catch/kill cyclists!

"Today we were sent a message with regards to any cyclists using the Clyde cycle path:

    Hello,

This e-mail is just intended to circulate around users of the clyde path near bells bridge, following an incident last night.

I went out cycling yesterday at around 7 pm and got tripped up by a rope tied across the cycle path -view image (apologies for the quality).

This photo was taken just behind the Crowne Plaza (before ex-helipad) and looking across the water at the science tower & museum.

A fellow cyclist, who I managed to stop on time, said that the rope had been there the night before too when he was out running. So I assume the culprits, had set it up again.

I have removed the rope and the police have been informed.

After my tumble, I heard wild and loud shouting from the car park behind and saw, what looked like a bunch of youngsters loitering in the car park. At some point they shouted " that will teach you to use the motor" - I highly suspect they were responsible.
Possibly the SECC or Crowne Plaza have CCTV footage for this area?

I felt it was important to share this picture with you as and I am glad nobody got seriously injured - this time.

Please remember to use your bike lights and adjust your speed.

    Kind regards,

    "

I hope the Police treat it as attempted murder

    Reckless indifference?

There's a similar story from Merseyside. Laws here would probably be (at very least, no intent required) Roads (Scotland) Act section 101 or 129 (2)

  7. The standard of recklessness would have to be immense, I.e. not just 'possible' it could cause death, but 'likely'. Put another way, if this was attempted murder then shoving someone or punching them in the stomach should be as well. That person could fall and hit their head, or suffer a fluke of internal injuries.

Will have to check the statute cited, suspect that's not creating attempted murder, but rather some specific roads offence?

  8. On the likelihood of death, we hear stories like this every year. Injury and damage caused, but as far as I'm aware (ready to be proved wrong) there's never been adeath caused by this in the UK. Simply put that fact in front of a judge being asked to treat this as attempted murder and bang goes the case.

This sort of thing upsets as much as it does everyone else on here I should imagine. The problem is surely that the actual consequences of doing something like this are lost of the kids that did it. I did some very stupid things when I was young so I'm in no position to take the moral high ground. I'd like to think the police would at least take this seriously enough to make the kids realise the severity of what they're doing.

I think it's a manifestation of the common problem that named groups such as cyclists, walkers and runners are dehumanised. The vernacular that is most often heard when referring to cyclists, for example, is in many cases predominantly pejorative. It would be nice to make the kids see the error of their ways by imagining a member of their family being the victim. Unfortunately I fear the only consequences that are likely to hit home are the consequences to the kids themselves by citing the potential crime and sentence. @WC if someone were to die, what would the crime be? Involuntary Culpable Homicide?

  10. Most likely culpable homicide, yes. Personally I'd think that about right in instances such as this (and alot of that being for reasons you highlight). It is the type of thing makes me very uneasy when i think about riding along the innocent in the dark though.

It's a difficult, and naturally emotive, area, and like you say, hard to see a way to get the message through.

I suppose the canal at least is less likely to suffer this brand of idiocy, since there are few places it would be physically possible. Although the shallow end of the gene pool always find a way to amuse themselves that involves pointlessly injuring others.
