A “neglected” school building used by community groups is set to be
bulldozed because it would be too expensive to repair.

My wife's off to the council on Tuesday to help with the deputation for that. Both children have been to lots of wee group things in Duncan Place.

It's a terrible shame. A great community facility with some really useful resources, including a woodwork/metalwork workshop on the ground floor where I made my Bamboo Trailer four years ago...

The Duncan Place Resource Centre Management Committee now have an objection template, if anyone would like to object to the proposed demolition hastiness: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wsqjjtdpb1mvkj9/public%20objections.doc?dl=0

But the plans have been reversed after city officials admitted its listed status meant any move to demolish would probably fail strict tests set down to protect historic buildings.

I wonder if the neglected maintenance that caused the building to deteriorate so badly and narrowly avoid a meeting with the demolition ball saved anything like the £4m it will cost to refurbish it?

"Delighted to announce that Duncan Place has received an award of £425,270 from the Community Asset Fund from the Big Lottery. This grant is the last piece of our funding jigsaw and it will now be possible to re-open a revitalised and renewed community resource in Leith, with a target of late 2019.

Under community ownership and management, the new Duncan Place hub will provide an accessible, unique, and thriving community space focused on health and well-being, hosting an fantastic range of inclusive activities and events. It will also make business and studio space available to social enterprises; local artists and charitable organisations.

This mix reflects the feedback we got from extensive community consultation, the needs of our diverse locality and our determination to ensure this will be a sustainable community hub, here to support future generations of Leithers.

We thank the Big Lottery Fund for supporting the vision of an accessible, inclusive, creative and dynamic community space and we look forward to building further on all the brilliant ideas our inspiring community has."

Registered charity Duncan Place is working to re-open the former Duncan Place Resource Centre. This community-led organisation aims to have this much loved and much needed community asset re-opened and under its management by 2020.

I know nothing of what has happened over the last 3 years apart from what is in this thread.

Clearly this was a key development -

    It highlights two things -

There are officials (and councillors) - not just Edinburgh - who don’t really like ‘old’ and do simplistic financial calculations on ‘value for money’.

It’s amazing what a few people can do with some determination - I’m sure the process required a great deal of unpaid effort.
