Global Cycling Network - what is it?

As a result of random YouTube wandering I've come across something called Global Cycling Network. I can't work out quite what it is: it appears to be a handful of competent-looking (and a bit blokey) cyclists talking about sport cycling (road and cross), with a random mixture of serious and not-so-serious videos about techniques, advice, news and reviews. It has high production values, although I can't work out how it's funded. Is it part of a TV channel?

I've found it quite entertaining. I'm sure you know about it already, and that (as usual) I'm the last to hear about this kind of thing.

    I liked this:

I have no clue how it's funded either, but it is certainly entertaining.

Heh, yeah... Matt Stephens, who won the UK national road race championships. Dan Lloyd who cycled for the Cervélo Test Team (which he mentions *a lot*, and it's a running gag now about how he mentions is so often). Simon Richardson (not the paralympic cyclist) who, erm, I don't know much about. Matt is hilarious, mainly because he falls off his bike a lot.

Yeah their videos on "food not appropriate for cycling" is unparalleled for silly visuals.

Their advice videos are pretty good if you have any mid to top end components. I used their videos to learn how to extract my Rotor cranks, something that is simultaneously really complex but very simple...

The other videos are ok, a touch pseudo sciencey however.

After a quick google they're part of an international marketing communications agency focused on pro-bike sport. This is one of their first "brands" that they've created as far as I can see.

There's so much of campaigning is done through blogs and (bless them) newsletters but I think there's huge scope for this style to be stolen and turned into powerful campaigning videos. This what it's like to ride the Quality Bike Corridor.

"powerful campaigning videos. This what it's like to ride the Quality Bike Corridor"

    No-one cares.

Even if not the QBC, video is more likely to get picked up and re-used than blogs or closely-typed newsletters.

Those guys - in two and a half years - 377,000 subscribers and over 64 million views. People like well made video.

@Instography: I agree. For those videos to be a success, though, they need high production values and professional presenters. Where GCN scores is in the quality of the presentation and the volume of output. I think you need both to build a user base. Maybe we could persuade them to do the QBC...

    There's an idea.

These people occasionally 'go overseas' -

Those streetfilms movies are really good and they're just clips and a voice-over. I can't see why this would need anyone other than the people here to do it. We've got plenty of HD recording equipment.

It would be good to have one thing to criticise and one thing to be positive about.

    Both true.

"It would be good to have one thing to criticise and one thing to be positive about."

    Indeed.

We may have to argue about the good!

    Mostly good - the Innocent.

Accidentally good - Silverknowes Prom (built long before 'cycling boom'). Just needs continuing to Newhaven...

'Bad' - QBiC, tactiles, George Street implementation, and? -

Let's do one on George Street since that is an 'experiment' and it could be our contribution to their evaluation. Might need to wait for some better weather.

    Good idea.

We could interview each other too.

Experiment runs until Sept so plenty time for better weather.

    Any 'obstacles' planned for Hogmanay?

If so, worth getting some footage.

I might finally have a use for that Contour.

I wonder if the battery on my proper video camera still works.

    Centrally script and direct and/or crowd-source self-filmed?

If we want a 'professional' look, then surely the film needs to be properly storyboarded and shot to order, rather than cobbled together from self-filmed stuff. Isn't that the point about GCN and what makes it appealing: it's made by professionals and looks it...

Might be an idea to start simple and make something by gathering up as many good photos and video clips as possible and seeing what can be made of it. But yes, something properly planned and shot would be ideal but that doesn't mean we couldn't use other clips to illustrate problems / experiences.

Bizarrely, when I search them on twitter, everyone tweeting their stuff seems to be women. New market niche?
