meanwhile 250 metres to the east they have knocked down a big hangar type warehouse (maybe once linked to the old Eastern SMT Bus Station also knocked down) and what is mooted as a hotel is going up fast. See also old Royal High School.

The building you describe was a council vehicle depot.

Indeed.
There is still a mystery door. It is at the very top of the retaining wall and would lead through from the Cranston Street Hostel. Fortunately there is no corresponding door on the other side as if used by the women who live there they would have fallen a long way down.
