Mate wants to do this cycle. Has anyone done it before? Just wondered how long the cycle might take.

Proposed itinerary - from duloch/East Dunfermline
    - cycle down back road to dalgety bay
    - a921 to Kirkcaldy
    - a955 to leven
    - a915 to upper largo
    - a917 to St. Andrews
    - a91 to leuchars
    Train home.

I'm conscious we're maybe not the most experienced of cyclists so not sure what those roads might be like.

I've never felt remotely safe on the A921 between D-Bay and Kirkcaldy, it feels dangerous - blind summits and chancers abound

The rest of your route would be reasonable in comparison, but you'd have to expect to be routinely ruffled by the chancing motons

If you want to enjoy your day, better off on the coastal path, perhaps ?

  3. The Lepra Edin - St Andrews ride roughly follows a back roads route from Dunfermline via Cleish, Kinross, Falkland, Freuchie and Craigrothie

Aye. Stay clear of the A roads if you want to enjoy the ride. There are some really nice quiet roads that are great for cycling in Fife. On the other hand, there maybe be some hills to contend with...

Fife Council produce wonderful maps on waterproof paper of key quiet road/off road cycle routes. May still have some trace of them on the council web site, or maybe still some paper maps from council offices or tourist information places.

The A91 is horrible for cycling, as is the A921 coast road. If you want to enjoy the ride, I'd suggest something like this:

    Dunfermline to St Andrews

Yes it has a few hills, but it's a lot more pleasant and rewarding than the A roads would be. Depending on your level of fitness, it should take between 3 and 4 hours riding time, plus stops.

Can only reinforce the advice about avoiding the A roads. The Lepra route is very nice. Of course, you have to go over the hills at Cleish and Freuchie but the whole route is much more enjoyable. Here's a copy of the Lepra route on MapMyRide than you can export as a GPX.

If you DM me an address I'll post a copy of the Fife Council map that has the routes clearly marked on it.

Thanks all. Might have a look at the Lepra route. @Insto - i'll DM just now.

I agree, A roads are probably best avoided.

I suppose it doesn't have to be St Andrews now that I think about it. Couple of mates want to get out on the bike for a few hours, maybe 50 miles max though.
