The much awaiting debate on Active Travel takes place at Holywood tomorrow. And what is the action orientated motion that our new Transport minister is proposing I hear you ask...

*S4M-11980 Derek Mackay: Active Travel—That the Parliament recognises the success of active travel programmes in enabling more people to be active more often, with record levels of investment in active travel; celebrates the 20th anniversary of the National Cycle Network; welcomes the publication of the second Cycling Action Plan for Scotland and the first National Walking Strategy; acknowledges the cross-party commitment to promoting active travel and progress made by the Scottish Government since 1999, alongside external partners, in laying the foundations for a more active and healthier nation, and commits to working together to realise the active travel vision, which outlines how Scotland will look in 2030 if more people are walking and cycling.
    Supported by: Keith Brown*

No so much action as it is too busy patting themselves on the back...

Time to write to MSPs I think..

What successes? Seriously?! How can Derek (and his boss Keith Brown who is supporting the parliamentary motion) suggest that there has been any success in the governments approach to active travel when they have not made any measurable progress towards the 2020 target vision aspiration pondering of having 10% modal share of cycling? Success?

    Amendment proposed by Alison Johnstone

*S4M-11980.2 Alison Johnstone: Active Travel—As an amendment to motion S4M-11980 in the name of Derek Mackay (Active Travel), insert at end "; reaffirms the Scottish Government’s target of 10% of journeys to be made by bike by 2020; notes the estimate by Spokes that active travel funding in the 2015-16 draft budget is lower than in the previous year; calls on the Scottish Government to reverse this cut and substantially increase funding for active travel; notes the ongoing debate and research into the introduction of presumed liability in relation to road accidents, and urges local authorities to meet growing demand for high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure, extend 20mph speed limits in built-up areas and provide walking and cycling training opportunities to every child in Scotland".

Whilst it's great that Alison is standing up to the drivel proposed, I am intrigued that "walking training opportunities" are.

Triggered by Dave's post, I had a look at various metrics across the scope of Derek's praise (so active travel uptake, greenhouse gas emissions, and obesity).

    Post of charts:

The SNP seem to be trying to make Holyrood more like Westminster, where the Members live in a bubble and believe their own propaganda...

It is time that the Scottish Government face up to the really problems that Scotland faces and take action to do something about the health crises which faces us. Active travel has a major part to play, but that can only happen when it get serious Government support (both national and local). It is for Holyrood to take a lead on this and set a positive agenda.

Currently all we get are wasteful vanity projects just as the White Elephant over the Forth and dualing of the A9.

@Darkerside, based on the training opportunities being provided to every child in Scotland I would assume that she is referring to the green cross code and other similar parts of primary school education.

The strange thing about the SNPs obsession with roads is that it makes it easier to get to hospital. Both in physical and metaphorical senses.

    Who is Stewart Stevenson?

    From BBC:
SNP MSP Stewart Stevenson says the debate is focussed on "entirely the wrong thing", as investment in infrastructure is not the issue.

We need instead, he says, to change what goes on in people's minds.

He says roller skates are a good method of active travel but has not been mentioned.

Mr Stevenson went on to say he's been looking at investing in a mono-cycle.

What a buffon. How do these people get voted in?

    msp@stewartstevenson.net

    Dear Mr Stevenson,

I read your comments made during the active travel debate with a mixture of horror and disgust. Do you really expect to be taken seriously when you make such flippant remarks as suggesting you are considering investing in a mono-cycle? The mere fact that you have chosen to use the single root version of the word rather than commonly used unicycle shows that you are more than a little out of touch.

To claim that the debate is "focussed on 'entirely the wrong thing', as investment in infrastructure is not the issue and that we need instead, he says, to change what goes on in people's minds", shows how far removed you are from any statements which can be backed up. It would be akin to saying that investing in the NHS is entirely the wrong thing and that we instead need to ensure that people do not make life choices which cause ill health.

I wonder how you would suggest we go about making such changes to people's minds? As clearly many years of SNP policy has utterly failed to do so.

If you do turn up at holyrood riding your shiney new Schlumpf then please accept my apologies as I will know you were not mistakenly looking at monocles.

    Regards

I think that's the first time I've seen "spoon" as an insult... (there's another forum where the swear filter alters offensive terms to words like "daffodil" rather than just inserting ****, which is quite amusing...)

The photos illustrating the BBC reporting were fairly random. I wondered where the first one (showing a woman on a bike in high heels and a short skirt) was taken... It does slightly give the impression that the BBC think its readers can't read a report on a parlimentary debate without needing a pretty picture every few minutes...
