I just heard that Andy Hunter of Storybikes who was an occasional poster here has died while cycling in England. There is no obvious evidence of a car being involved, but they don't know any more. I will let you know when the funeral arrangement are announced.
Andy was a lovely man. A huge supporter of Pedal on Parliament and the Harison Park feeder ride - which he lead at least once. He had retired from Garvald to set up storybikes and loved storytelling almost as much as he loved bike riding. Every year he took out Sunday school on a ride to spylaw park, which involved him telling a story and teaching the kids to skip stones.
He had recently celebrated his 60th birthday with a big ceilidh - his only regret was that he'd not managed to dance with everyone. the last thing I said to him was 'there will be more ceilidhs'.

How sad. I have read about Andy in the past but have never had the chance to ride with him or hear his stories.

The world just lost one of the old breed of true gentlemen.
Very sad news.

That is very sad, my thoughts are with his family.

I'll add to those thoughts here. Quite a shock. In the small world of cycling he was very well known. He had built up a unique niche business combining his passions for people, places and storytelling. A great loss to the diversity of interests that cycling can embrace.

That's terrible news.

Very sad - he came out with us on 20-milers rides (and led several, particularly in the depths of winter and along lots of muddy tracks and he and his stories will be missed.

Didn't meet Andy, but having looked through his website he seemed like an excellent sort of chap.
The world needs more story tellers.

I wish that I had found out about Andy and his website sooner; Storybikes sounds like a great idea. Very sad.

The funeral will be at 11 on Friday the 23rd at Polwarth Parish Church. Lots of bike parking in the churchyard on the railings.

Nice notice in the Herald. Thanks Kim for tweeting the link, which I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise
Tragedy as cyclist dies after epic journey to funeral
Published on 19 January 2015CarolynChurchill
A RETIRED social worker has collapsed and died as he rode hundreds of miles on his bike to a friend's funeral.Andy Hunter, 60, had lived in Edinburgh since 1978 but cycled all the way back to his native Herefordshire to catch up on old times with locals and attend the funeral of old friend Freda Smith.
His body was found alongside his bike at the side of the road at Michaelchurch Escley, Herefordshire, where the funeral was held. It is believed he suffered a heart attack.
He was cycling to Michaelchurch to attend the funeral where he was due to meet his sister, Rosemary, and afterwards they were going to meet up with friends and villagers from the county.
Mr Hunter worked for 25 years in social services and retired in 2009 from working as a day services manager for Garvald Edinburgh, which provides services for adults with learning disabilities.
In 1981 Mr Hunter formed the Edinburgh Community Trust, now Forth Sector, with the aim of creating work for disadvantaged people.
Over ensuing years it has provided training, support and employment to some of the most disadvantaged people in society through its businesses.
He had been a storyteller for 20 years and a member of the Scottish Storytelling Network since 1998.
In 2008 he set up his own company, Storybikes, where he combined his love of cycling and storytelling.
He did guided cycle tours, telling stories that were connected with the places and landscapes.
His funeral will be held at Polwarth Parish Church in Edinburgh on January Friday at 11am.
There will be a thanksgiving service for his life at St. Michael's Church, Michaelchurch Escley at 12.30pm on Friday, April 24.

by all accounts an impressive turnout and show of respect. (i was wrangling the pre-schooler and doing school collection so not there)
who knew Andy was an Old Etonian?!
what a guy.

I arrived a little late and it was standing room only at the back. Such an interesting man - lesson learned that we should be interested in people and share stories not just trivia.

LivD - we were at back upstairs but so many people there it was hard to move. Met DdF as Andy was a lot of help to Spokes (not to mention all the other things he seemed to have crammed into his very productive life!).
Went to Zazoo barge again after but it was (still) not open. Went to Blueberry Hill cafe in morning. Zazoo maybe on winter hours..

It'd be fantastic if cycle tourism action plan could find some way of marking late Andy Hunter of StoryBikes. @SpokesLothian @CyclingEdin"
