Smart communication between cyclist helmet and expensive volvo cars to highlight a potential coming together even with out line of sight. Not a bad idea in principle though there are so many downsides that I can't imagine it'll even be part of "the solution".

I watched a piece on the news a couple of days ago and they seemed to be saying it would help me to know when a car or truck was too close... erm, I have to say I feel I'm *very* aware of that already thanks!
As to the driver, too many of them already know they're too close, the problem is to find a reason for them to care :-(

The proximity of a smart helment to an expensive Volvo could surely be used to limit the speed of said car to below that of said helmet until a safe gap is achieved, in much the same way as the somewhat tedious Volkswagen "Safe Distance Technology" advert that is playing at the Filmhouse? Not that that is how it will be implemented...

10,000v through the steering wheel if the car is doing more than 25mph and gets within 1m of a ped/cyclist or other small object ;-)

does anyone listen to the spokesmen podcast? they spoke about this in the last episode, with carlton reid having a lot to say about it. main points were the usual helmet type arguments (including the expectation that cyclists who don't have the right kit may be interpreted as not valuing their safety) and also that in-car systems like this tend to have annoying alerts/alarms that get turned off.

general consenus was that it was well intentioned but ultimately not a great idea as it absolves drivers of responsibility

this episode also had a segment about helmet safety recalls and minimum safety standards
