Bleh. Didn't realise he wasn't standing in Liberton/Gilmerton this time round though - standing in Morningside [sic] instead.

It's much more balanced now - 38% for, 62% against.

... and 55% in favour this morning. The twitter troops must have been out in force

...people wishing violence on Lesley Hinds - it seems especially virulent because she's a woman...
Sadly totally usual when it comes to female politicians, regardless of party or subject.

Surely, even if a small percentage of drivers stick to 20 at rush hour it will have a big effect (on the few stretches of road that cars can actually get above 20 at rush hour).

People should relax. On the bike, hammering it or pootling to work it makes about 5 mins difference. ...and that time is made up by having to shower. I rarely rush to work these days. And it probably takes about the same amount of time in a car.

I rarely drive but when I do I'll make a small difference by sticking to 20.

I went to the 20s plenty conference last year, and there was a a lot of evidence that in places like Cardiff where they had implemented it, collisions and casualties went down (generally by more than projected) and even without much enforcement beyond the first few weeks, average speeds also went down, though not always to 20mph.

Got pushed on lots of channels (spokes FB etc) last night and now swung in favour in the classic "browsing online" time of 9pm-midnight.

It's almost like people who are reasonable and would like the roads to be a safer place don't really read the EEN normally...

Yes - the EEN is demonstrating that their editorial policy is driving their readership down

Sorry, but his twitter banner photo makes me want to say something offensive.

Judging by the parking sign on the railing, I'd hazard a guess that that BMW is parked illegally in the permit holders bays.

I once spent three hours drinking tea with Nick in his mum's garage.

He's a nice young man, though not especially well informed and I don't agree with him much politically.

Did some enraged FAKE FEMINIST cyclist try to wrench the doors off Nick's motor?

    That's the enemy.

That's an affable fellow citizen. He's a good human, crowriver.

If I had to answer for everything I did when I was young....well I'd be in prison for one thing. Let's make friends with him.

He did support #OptionA for Roseburn at the final decision before Christmas..

No he's not. He's an entitled, arrogant, professional politician who loves rabble rousing. The fact that he's so ludicrously proud of his motor that he puts it on his Twitter profile tells us a great deal about the rationale behind his transport 'policy'. Basically, oppose anything that fails to further entrench and privilege motor vehicle drivers. He's a modern day Mr Toad and Clarkson wannabe.

    Know thine enemy.

BTW, I don't think the BMW i8 (electric car) is his.

There's also an i3 in the background. I suspect he got some kind of electric car tryout courtesy of BMW or the Council

    Suspect it's not his.

He's probably with the SNP on 'the future is electric cars'.

    "The future is electric cars"

Well, the Conservative's environment paper is really pushing them: proposing free parking, letting them use bus lanes,....

Sometimes it's worth scanning the comments.

(Though in post-truth fake-news days it's impossible to separate true opinions from attempts at humour!)

Once again a publically elected body are keen to be seen 'doing something'. There is no discernible benefit for safety and indeed it will introduce another potential risk - of increased car accidents, as cars are now tailgating each other far closer at 20 than they did at 30. The other issue is pollution. If a car spends 15 minutes on a journey that used to take 10 - it's issuing 50% more emissions. That's if they don't hit one of the potholes of course....

crowriver - yes, a quick look at that photo and a scan of what this chap supports certainly gives me the boak. However, if he is our enemy then that probably means that we (cyclists) are his. Probably not a great relationship for us to have with someone who could conceivably be transport convenor in a few months.

That said, if the last few years has taught me anything, it is is that we should call out bogus arguments and "alternative facts" quickly, loudly and often - before disaster strikes.

No need to like the guy, no need to agree with him - every cause to engage with him.

To be such an enthusiastic Conservative so young is worrisome, but he is a member of the Humanist Society of Scotland, so perhaps not irredeemable.

Fair point Morningsider. However as the saying goes "keep your friends close, your enemies closer".

There is a need to understand the enemy's position, to monitor their movements and gauge their strength: the better to "engage" them in due course (in military parlance, engaging the enemy is attacking them).

By all means treat the enemy with respect, but don't mistake the enemy for a friend.

More on Cllr Cook from 2012:

"Nick has been active in the community for a number of years, with many residents familiar with him as the local constituency organiser for the Edinburgh South Conservatives. Other residents know of Nick as campaign manager for Stephanie Murray during the 2010 Ward by-election, where Liberton & Gilmerton Conservatives enjoyed a welcome increase in their vote share.

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Nick also works as a researcher and caseworker for Lothians MSP Gavin Brown, giving him a sound understanding and record of action on issues facing local residents and others across Edinburgh and the Lothians."

From the Edinburgh Reporter (which often seems fairly supportive of the Conservatives).

If we want to see what a local Conservative & Unionist party apparatchik looks like, Cllr Cook fits the bill to a tee.

Whatever anyone thinks of his youthful interests, he is a councillor, and expects to continue to be after May.

Whether he wants to remain with 'transport' or has higher aspirations remains to be seen.

He is also in the Party that is seeing a significant revival.

He has been known to support 20mph.

Perhaps he'd appreciate a cycle tour of his (hoped for) new ward.

    Certainly needs inviting to PoP.

Nick is energetic, polished and successful. Perhaps supporters of less popular parties could learn from him?
