    Couldn't stop myself from reading the comments...

    I think more has to be made of the devastating impact of single issue group SPOKES. They seem to have much more influence over what happens in Edinburgh than their profile should allow.

    It's all very easy to berate the likes of Hinds, it's time to look more closely at the sinister figures who pull the strings behind the scenes.

    I noticed a poster at the Waverley which invited the public to join SPOKES at council hustings on Transport policy. What's that all about?

    I always feel disappointed that the sinister figures at Spokes haven't pulled enough strings to allow people to cycle safely through the city.

    Just imagine what any other extremist group could achieve if they stuck at it for 40 years.

    I don't want to seem naïve or gullible but I'm almost certain that some cars heading north on Leith Walk at Friday hometime were deliberately sticking nearer 20mph than 30mph.

    Had occasion to drive along Melville Drive on Friday in my fairly typical family sized car, out of interest, cruise control set at 20 in fourth gear and averaged 60odd mpg, must be a lot of had drivers out there if they manage to cut their mpg in half by driving at 20..

    Some of the personal attacks on Lesley Hinds have been disgusting. No surprise that people don't want to become councillors.

    Just how much can the EEN milk this one...?

    Posted 7 years ago #
  8. The EEN will milk it until the paper dies. Got to keep their faithful comment frothers posting in order to keep their page hit numbers up!

    @hankchief, maybe we can entice him back again. He loves his cars but also his bikes.

    I've stepped into a couple of anti-20mph rants recently on FB, expecting to find myself in the middle of a hornets' nest, and found that quite a few people chimed in to support 20mph. It's worth making the case - the ones shouting loudly are not the majority.

    The benefits claimed for 20mph zones are almost all empirically measureable;

    * Concentrations of various pollutants
    * KSI stats
    * ambient noise levels
    * journey times

    Let's just wait a year, look at the numbers and then continue or roll back.

    I'm rather flattered that I'm regarded as one of the Illuminati or an acolyte of George Soros.

    I firmly believe that - in Edinburgh. No idea about Manchester!

    Ex-EEN editor/Conservtive candidate managed to squeeze in most of the points that WC debunked in his blog post (linked to by HankChief above):

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/opinion/john-mclellan-voters-are-being-driven-to-the-limit-1-4388891

    First of all, few people die on Edinburgh’s roads anyway

    watching the speedometer more than the road, revving the engine because the correct gear is hard to judge, misjudging the speed of other cars, not knowing what the limit is, driving along wide, non-residential roads at night slower than a dead monarch on a gun carriage.

    Edinburgh Peoples' Survey 2016:

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/9099/eps_2016_full_report

    60% support 20mph, 20% oppose,14% indifferent, 7% don't know.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  19. But as I mentioned on Twitter, this survey was secretly only released to SPOKES members by LH to ensure that things went the way the anti-car council and their shady cycle-lobbying group wanted :-)

    @three has any one raised this with the EEN this is serious news that should be covered extensively by a quality local paper...

    driving along wide, non-residential roads at night slower than a dead monarch on a gun carriage.

    This last one seems to be the main complaint of folk I've spoken to (who presumably do 100mph+ on deserted motorways in the middle of the night). Most of whom claim that they've not seen any cars sticking to 20, which I've been able to instantly dispute: Raeburn Place in Stockbridge has seen a positive flowering of 20mph driving - every time I've cycled through there I've been held up by a car observing the limit.

    I didn't realise Duddingston low road was going to be 20mph! And folk were sticking to it! Made me very happy - albeit I was driving at the time so not as happy as if I'd been on my bike.

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/transport/six-out-of-10-capital-residents-back-20mph-scheme-1-4401204

    Fakenews obviously.

    "

    But Tory transport spokesman Nick Cook said the wording of the question – To what extent do you support or oppose 20mph speed limits in Edinburgh? – was too general to genuinely test public opinion on the city’s scheme.

    He said: “The survey asks only a general question on residents’ opinion on 20mph speed limits. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it makes no direct reference to the council’s polarising blanket scheme.

    @chdot the council hasn't sent me a polarising blanket? :(

    Nick Cook doesn't like general questions. He doesn't like specific questions either, for example "please name streets that you believe should not be 20mph".

    Also, applying his criteria, if only 20% of the city are opposed then doesn't that count as "blanket" endorsement of 20mph?

    "the council hasn't sent me a polarising blanket"

    Nick Cook will make sure you get one IF you re-elect him.

    Seems a straight forward question on the survey to me

    It's a very straightforward question. I think what Nick is saying is that they should have cooked the book by phrasing the question more specifically. eg. Do you support 20mph on roads ... which have no other vehicles on them..., at night..., when you are driving on them and running late?
