    HERE IS WHERE WE RIDE.
    AT OUR HOUSE, INDOOR
    CYCLING IS OUR PASSION.
    FEEL THE RHYTHM.
    RIDE THE BIKE.
    RIDE ON.

Not sure of people's view on spin classes but there is a new venue just set up in Edinburgh that may float your boat

Not geographically convenient for me so I'd have enough of a workout getting there & back not to need a session.

What is the story with "spin classes"?

Posters up all over Commie Pool advertising "the launch of its first ever group cycle classes". Well, summers coming, so what better time of year to hop in the car, drive to the Commie Pool, sit on a static bike in a hot room listing to crap music while some idiot shouts at you, shower and drive home again?

I can just about understand this in the winter (I have my road bike on a turbo at home in winter, which is similar without the driving, crap music or shouty idiot). However, in summer? just why?

You can see the dafties on their spin machines just by the entrance to Craiglockhart, where the over-filled car park is ever more over-filled, presumably with the cars of these numpties who cannot conceive of actually getting on a bicycle at their home and simply cycling somewhere that they need to be, or cycling for sheer pleasure in the sunshine.

We live in a very stupid society, where encouraging people to drive their cars to a venue in order to cycle static bikes seems like a good idea.

Spinning isn't urban utility cycling. It's more akin to a dance class. There's space for both.

    No need to hate.

    @Klaxon It's not hate. It's despair.

Over winter I tried a few spin classes to try and offset the solo training I was doing at 6am at the gym on the watt bikes.

    A few observations

    1) It's more fun that doing it on your own
    2) the bike geometry is mostly horrid and is not set up like a bike - it's most comfortable sitting almost upright.
    3) there is 0 chance anyone is doing exactly what the instructor says because I followed her instructions to a T and watched my heart rate explode all over the place.

    Example -
"Ok so let's spin - turn up the resistance a bit....... ok out the saddle ...... sit down..... up the resistance so you are really working hard.... (at this point I'm cranking it up high - feels good) .... Everyone's working hard .... out the saddle.... now sit down - take off half a turn of resistance and spin really fast...."

At this point everyone is sitting down and going at about 100 RPM while I am barely able to turn 60 at that resistance. Clearly they're not "turning it up so they're working really hard" in the first place - either that or I have the wrong muscles!

Anyway - it's good fun, it is easy to see results, it's no good for your actual cycling and it gave me a sore back. Take a towel.
