    As seen on the ERC forum;

    seoul cycle design competition 2010

    See how many of these revolutionary new designs you can spot that are actually re-worked existing designs. (Such as Obree's Old Faithful as the winner, or the Zipp 2001 appearing in more than 1 frame)

    AUDI EKIB DESIGN

    The Audi „EKIB“ is a Lifestyle Cycle. It contains many distinctive features to assure the extrovert and stylish user a lot of unwanted attention. Features include a folding mechanism, articulated frame steering and a flexy frame setup. .... Enjoy that Audi feeling with the freedom of not having a car. Quartz headlights extra.

    Copy edited... I couldn't help it!

    I'm sorry but this will flex a bit - although the Bike Works had a bike that had the same flexy seat post idea.

    Articulated steering has been used by Flevo in the past to make their older bikes truly un-nickable.

    ya, lots of truly ugly/impractical bike designs there, my favorite is the sideways bike from the irish guy

    Michael Killian? I saw his Sideways Bike mk2 at one of the York Cycle Shows, two or three years back.

    Kaputnik, there's another take on the suitcase-becomes-bicycle as pioneered by the Scoot, in there. I wonder if they've made it weigh less than 32lbs? And lots of designs following the cross shape of Old Faithful and the Trimble mountain bikes from the late 80s.

    On first glance this one looks quite pleasing and a neat design. However I wonder why they decided to dispose with convention and put the drive side on the left rather than the right. The shielded chain looks nice, but in practice might actually end up allowing water, grease and muck to accumulate and attack the chain faster. And coaster brake only? Sheldon would have a fit with no front brake.

    The lack of a rear cog is its crowning achievement :) Surely the only thing better than single speed is no speed?

    Must have a 5T rear! 9T is possible but less than that you can't fit hub far as I know.

    The chain guard may be like the HEBE Chainglider fitted to some bikes. That's ok but does need cleaned - as do chain tubes on recumbents. One of my customers had a Chainglider as standard on his VSF bike. The guard lasted 3 years. His chain was a wider 8 speed on a Rohloff so was still ok after a clean I think.
    Arellcat has run a Scotoiler on one of her bikes to extend chain life.

    If you want to look at something advanced and in production then the Flevo Greenmachine has been there and done that. The chain is inside the frame and the Rohloff gear is in mid of bike. How dos it ride? OK enough but pedals seem high. I tried one round outdoor track at Sloten Amsterdam. Frame does make some transmission noise. Might not be to everyone's taste but is quite a new take on what to do with transmission.

    The Seoul cycle design competition 2010 does not address any of the things that actually keep The Bicycle Works in business.
    This of course is a good thing!
