Cyclist had come off on towpath out of town and hit his head. posted here to say kudos to the cyclist who was with him. He was composed confident and reassuring and the patient was in good hands while they waited for a (what seemed precautionary) ambulance. Couldn't add anything, so moved on.

@paddyirish whereabouts was that? I saw the aftermath of an accident on the towpath just beyond the bridge that goes over the canal and Lanark Road at around 9am. I didn't see any sign of a cyclist having been hurt, but one of the semi-regular towpath pedestrians, John (who uses a walking stick), was being helped away from the scene by a couple of ambulance men. Big John was in attendence with a couple of cyclists and there appeared to be a small amount of blood on the towpath around where they were standing. I asked if everyone was alright (which they said that they were), but was unable to offer Big John any tissues as he requested, before continuing on my way since I felt that there were more than enough people hanging around as it was. I will no doubt hear more about this from Big John in subsequent days when I catch up with him for a chat...
Incidentally, this bridge is the only place where I've seen the aftermath of an accident previously, which was after dark one evening, maybe 3-4 years ago. On that occasion I think that a collision had taken place between a cyclist and a jogger (or possibly another cyclist) under the bridge itself and looked like it had been relatively serious given that at least one of them was being stretchered away. I have always taken this whole section rather more cautiously since then, especially when heading out of town due to the blind corner around the far (out of town) end of the bridge.

Location wise I don't know the area, but it was after the aqueduct, about 0.5 - 1 mile before Wester Hailes heading Westbound I was pretty sure I saw two bikes and two people, the patient was in jeans and had a big hat with ear flaps.
But maybe I was still groggy on a Monday morning (after being up for 2 hrs with my 2yo during the night) and I couldn't count up to 2... I wouldn't be surprised...

Sounds like the right kind of area. John (of the walking stick) does wear an ear flap style hat, but I'm not sure about the jeans - I was under the impression that he had fallen, not necessary as the result of a collision, but, like I say, I imagine that I will find out far more when I catch up with Big John. I didn't want to start asking questions about what had happned while the two cyclists who had stopped along with Big John were there for fear of sounding at all accusatory. Also it was very cold...

Yes, the incident that I spotted was just by the Burke and Hare statue http://osm.org/go/evfIvftm5--?m=
I turn off to drop the mini Flemings off on Redhall drive, but was I came up just before 08:30, I could see a pair of Jeans sticking out into the path and a cyclist standing by.
Once I had dropped off my passengers, and rejoined the path, a second cyclist was on the phone (presumably calling an ambulance) I asked if they needed a hand and they indicated things were under control. I didn't spot a bicycle for the person who was down, but didn't stop so I might have missed something.
I passed Big John just a little bit up the path.

I spoke to Big John this morning and can confirm that no cyclists were involved in the accident, they were merely first on the scene to help. It sounds like they had hung around for well over half an hour in the cold though, so well done to them. If I get any further updates from Big John I'll post again, but it sounds like other John was ultimately doing ok after what was an unfortunate fall.
