  2. Just noticed their FB page linked to the other 20mph thread just 6 hours ago.

    From his Facebook page:

support from Chaplins Disco, the people of Edinburgh taxi's and off course the people of Edinburgh who agree with me on a Say No to 20 blanket in Edinburgh. Let's rally together , stand up and be counted

You've been counted. There were 39 of you.

I'm on my way to the Farmer's Market and 10% of the protest have walked past me on Lothian Road. It was an impressive sight!

(I'm going to stop now, but this has made me laugh!)

    Sorry, final post....

I saw the bike with the "Say No ..." sign chained up at the market. The owner was taking a photo of it. He was wearing a helmet....I'll let you draw your own conclusions about the consistency of his views on safety....

I notice the EEN just pulled their pre-demo article from their website, which said over 100 people would take part along with lots of taxis ("Taxis protest over Edinburgh's 20 mph limit").

I wonder what happens to a local paper that doesn't understand the mood of the local population?

EDIT - seems to be back up now, which allows me to include this quote:

"Organisers say upwards of 100 people could join the march, which will see the Pleasance and St Mary’s Street closed at Holyrood Road, and rolling road closures at Candlemaker Row and along Grassmarket."

    Or not.

  10. Heehehe! They have pictures of the 'march' on the FB page now. A few people on the FB site also complaining about people being too apathetic to turn up etc etc, so recriminations have started. Of course it might not be apathy, it might genuine,y be that not that many people actually do support the cause, there must be 'some' reason they got 39 people and PoP got 4,000....

I love the irony of the taxis going at walking pace and causing congestion, especially when they're the people who complain about other marches in the city.

Why am I enjoying this so much? Have a look at this EEN classic from 2 February:

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/transport/protest-march-against-20mph-limits-plan-1-3676998

Highlights: "A PROTEST march against the proposed 20mph limit to be imposed on many of the Capital’s streets is expected to attract hundreds of people."

    and

"If more than 500 people turn up to the march, police will close roads along the route"

  14. There 'is' a certain guilty pleasure, isn't there?

Y'know, at the first PoP (and subsequent ones I think) the first riders arrived at Parliament before the last ones had even left the Meadows.... EEN have definitely misjudged their uncritical coverage of this.

I thought Evening News had pulled the article also.

Perhaps the EEN will rethink its stance on road safety in Edinburgh in the light of the abject failure of this little stunt. The uncritical coverage it has given Mr MacCusker's poorly thought-out, poorly articulated, evidence-free one-man "campaign" has been embarrassing.

Well at least they got good weather for it...(!)

Unlikely reason's for lack of turn up
    - not enough convenient parking
    - held up in traffic by cyclists
    - held up in traffic by trams
    - blatant intimidation by persons unknown
    - supporting the silent majority by vigorous non attendance
    - tactical use of proxy walkers to minimise traffic delays

    Music played by Chaplin's Disco?
    - Convoy / WC McCall etc

    "Photos"

Did the police close the pavements before the march came past? Baring the truly impressive sight of 8 taxis in a row, wouldn't there be more people than that on a normal sunny Saturday morning? Is it possible for a march to attract negative numbers?

    Has anyone mentioned Schadenfreude yet?

    :-D

It is not nice to mock the afflicted. Naughty CCEers.

Bless them and their teeny wee microscopic protest.

I loved the cyclist filtering past all the taxis at the end of the second vid!

Were the taxis all the bigger people carrier ones? It did not look like there were any Hackney cabs? So maybe just one company rather than any more widespread support from taxi trade?

If I held a demo that attracted limited support I would conclude that I was out of kilter with popular opinion and follow obi wan's advice and go home and reconsider my life.

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/transport/20mph-plan-will-make-playmobile-joke-of-city-1-3698617

this is the state of journalism in edinburgh:

    1. first they claim: 'upwards of a hundred expected to turn out' then bury 'only a few dozen attended' at the bottom of para.

    2. then the claim roads were closed, when eyewitnesses and video clear they weren't

    3. and that 'surveys' suggest 'thousands' opposed. when those online polls were not 'surveys' in any accepted meaning of the term.

is it any surprise our local democracy is in such foul shape?

    Neil Grieg classic quote:-

“I think people are against it but probably resigned to it .”

Hey, have you ever considered the possibility that maybe people aren't against it? Nah, of course not.

"is it any surprise our local democracy is in such foul shape?"

    Weeelll -

This story isn't the same thing as an editorial. It would be nice if they had run a story saying 'poor turnout shows support for 20mph', but...

Of course it's entirely possible that the ENews just went for rent-a-quotes (including the Playmobil nonsense). However they have flushed out the 'official' Conservative view of what cities/streets are for. I wonder if that's the party Ruth Davidson wants to lead.

    "

Following that protest, Conservative transport spokesman Alex Johnstone said the policy was evidence that the city council is not interested in protecting Edinburgh’s interests and warned it would make the Capital seem like a “poor man’s train set”.

    "

    Other views are available -

    "

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said he was not surprised at the strong reaction but thought Mr Johnstone’s comments were “over-egged”.

    "

There is no doubt that in the not too distant past, CEC took a complete fright when the ENews criticised something.

The last version of closing George Street (part of a wider traffic management plan), was abandoned rapidly before it was given a proper change to 'bed-in'.

Braver officials/politicians, or a change in the balance of influence?

    (Or both?)
