Looking for a MTB challenge?

    I don't know how many mountain bikers we have on here, but if anyone is looking for a big MTB challenge which can be tackled from your front door check this out... ;-)

    The brain child of Markus Stitz, the brand new Capital Trail 220 is a serious MTB audax for those who like a bit of the rough stuff. Many will start, but few will finish.

    I do like an eccentric challenge, but.....

    '..we will announce the exact length and profile soon..'

    Maybe part of the challenge is deducing the route first?

    According to spike Milligan or was it ronnie barker, Markus has a sister called Norma..... I am getting my coat now.

    Charley Farley and piggy Malone, made me laff as schoolboy which I am afraid I still am

    @gembo

    Are you slumped in the doorway of Jigsaw clutching an empty rum bottle? That's me over in front of the Jack Wills store.

  5. I do wonder of this is a cross bike type thing. Certainly there will be plenty of road sections (appears they only give you a 'suggested' route). Having walked up the Three Brethren that's definitely crossable. Hmmm, could I get fit enough for June? Nice that the finish is so close to home...

    @wilmington excellent attempt to get back on topic.

    IWRATS, you will of course know that when Winona Ryder chucked johnny depp he had his tattoo altered to Wino Forever

    @I were right about that saddle: at the present time Markus has ridden most of the route in sections, but I think he wants to do the whole thing in one go to do a final check and create the GPX file.

    Yes, it could be done on the desktop, but some people like to do things the hard way... ;-)

    Oh and did I mention that the Adventure Show might be interested in filming it? But as I say it is early days yet.

    @Wilmington's Cow: As I understand it the route is mostly off road with only a few on road link where needed. I seem to remember Markus saying that it might be too challenging for cross bikes. Humm, after some checking he actually said was "with a lot of skills you might be getting away with a cross bike, but I would advise against it!"

    That said, I am sure we could think up a variation, with a suitable handicap, to allow the CX crowd to join the fun... ;-) I will suggest it to Markus at our next meeting.

    Markus has a sister called Norma.....

    And I've heard Ed Balls claim to have a sister called Ophelia.

  10. Kim, check with Markus how he'd view it in comparison to the Three Peaks cyclocross race... I guess it's all really dependant on the actual route, but the locations I've heard mentioned, while sometimes reasonably technical, could, I think, be crossable.

    @gembo, nothing annoys me more than thread drift. No wait, that's not right. John Inverdale, nothing annoys me more than John Inverdale - I always get the two mixed up.

    So you have two things which annoy you. John Inverdale, thread drift and references to 1970s comedy show.

    Three. Three things annoy you.

    Apparently people did expect the Spanish Inquisition. They warned you well in advance.

    There was a 30-40 day grace period during which time you could confess.

    Confess, convert or make like hockey players and get the puck outta there. However (smokes pretend cigarette in pseudo academic manner) social and geographical mobility in torquemada's spain was non-existent. Options were therefore limited.

    @Wilmington's Cow I get the feeling there is an MTB v CX thing here and Markus is coming at it very much from an MTB view point... ;-)

    I'll talk to him about it, my view that everyone should be welcome to try it, so long as they have the experience to take on such a ride (this one ain’t for beginners).

    This thread is a useful sounding board, even if the children keep trying to butt in while the adults are talking... ;-)

    Mobility for most people was fairly limited until… the bicycle.

    Hah, thread drift my aunt Harriet.

    Fair enough, if you feel you can do it on a cross bike, just go for it! :D

    But, but, but, but, but, but. How do I know if I can do it on a cross bike or a child's tricycle for that matter if I don't know what 'it' is?

    Give us a hint....summit of Allermuir? Musselburgh ash lagoons? Harthill services? Bottom of Dudingston Loch?

    Harthill Services - that'd be a sign of a proper audax

    I can do you a great rubbing of parts?

  26. Iwrats hour the nail on the head. Without knowing the actual route, with just comments of 'most is off road and it'll kind of go around here' not really resolving just what the route and surface are actually like. It's a bit off a blind shot really without more detail!

    @Wilmington's Cow

    During WWII, punters selected for SOE training had to get themselves to Spean Bridge without money or other external help. If you couldn't do that your selection had been a mistake. Perhaps this is similar?

    My mate just suggested this all too detailed challenge and I have accepted;

    @Iwrats patience dear boy, he is still putting together the details and riding sections of the route. But here are some pictures he has posted from recent scoping rides

    I stand suitably admonished. Charmed and admonished. The two things I stand are charmed, admonished and intrigued. No wait...

    @Instography will be horrified to see what your mate's doing with his bike.

    "just that I don't have a mountain bike"

    @WC, Have you sold your Cotic MTB? Soul wasn't it?

    @Kim, If you want The Adventure Show's contacts I have a few emails of the researcher/cameraman/producers.
