    As always, I'm more worried about the length of driving ban than the custodial sentence. In this case 2 years.

    Seems pretty fair to me. There are plenty of cases of drivers either not prosecuted at all or getting just 3-6 points after turning left over the top of cyclists etc. (I can't be bothered providing google evidence, it's too depressing).

    If I was banned from my profession for a couple of years I should think it would be quite difficult to get back in?

    Stories like this emphasise the perception that the roads are only as safe as the most dangerous driver on them. Deaths among cyclists are reported because they are rare. If driver deaths were reported equally the full horror would be clearer and the relative safety of cycling would be revealed.
