PASSENGERS will be left without direct trains on Scotland’s busiest rail line between Edinburgh and Glasgow for six weeks this summer.

Travellers on the fastest route between the cities will have to change trains, adding significantly to journey times.

The disruption will be caused by the closure of the Winchburgh tunnel in West Lothian from 13 June to 27 July, as part of a £750 million project to electrify the line for faster and greener trains.

ScotRail confirmed trains would run between Glasgow Queen Street and Linlithgow, where passengers would have to change to another train or a replacement bus to and from Edinburgh.

(Three) other routes to Glasgow are available.

Surely the important question is how this will affect the ongoing War Against Drivers?

I'm wondering if this is the usual evening snews sensationalism and part reporting of the story.

The original plan was to reduce frequency and to run the Edin/Glas trains up to Dalmeny from Lithgo, driver changes end, and drives on to Edinburgh.

So new plan is Glas/Edin trains will terminate at Lithgo and you'll have to change on to Dunblane train which will continue in to Edinburgh?

It will still have to go via Dalmeny though, and reverse as described there. There's no other route from the east to Linlithgow avoiding the Winchburgh tunnel.

Exactly. Bathgate/Airdrie route (preferred option I'd say); via Shotts; or even the odd train via Carstairs/Motherwell.

My commuter destination is Linlithgow and I can't tell whether this is going to be good for me (trains still stop there), bad for me (greater congestion on limited platforms) or a royal pain in the Palace (replacement coach services, handcarts etc).

Hop on a Bathgate train, alight at Uphall and cycle along canal towpath or quiet roads?

It's a pity that's the section where the canal goes wandering!

    Canal 12 miles, road 7!

I forgot to also point out above that there is a faster slower train in between the slower slower train that takes one hour + or - a few minutes as well as the bAthgate route, and the occasional intercity motherwell one. So five services in total on four different tracks.?....?

I am catching the faster slower train at Haymarket just after noon today and will be at Central 55 minutes later if all goes well.

There is also an edinburgh Ayr train which is direct but I think the first bit is one of the slow trains (either the faster one or the slower one) and you sit in the train at Central until it goes to Ayr, helps those who don't like walking between central and queen street when travelling from edinburgh to Ayr and have 2.5 hours to spare which as far as I know is just my mum but there may be others.
