Anyone know more about this? edintravel on twitter says there are new cycle counters being installed, some of which are requiring temp lights/traffic control. which suggests they're on-road?
the list is here:

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

SRD, yes I note that one is sited at Stenhouse Drive - I saw the chap installing this on monday (well, he was installing a big box thing to a lamp post with a chain/padlock).
I had thought this was perhaps to go across the road, but it looks more like this is one of the 'no on road impact' - i.e. sensor strip will be installed on the Broomhouse Path.
I suspect that one will give big numbers as its one of the main paths into edinburgh from the west - equally, lots of people like me going to Edinburgh Park.
I assume that the Harrison Park off road one is on the canal path??
I noticed the one in Roseburn Park has now been installed.
Also, is there one on the Pinkhill path as well? It's not mentioned on the list, but a small electrical-style box has appeared at the side of the path, similar to the one in the park. I didn't notice any strips on the ground.
If it is a counter then they havent installed it in the correct place to capture the true number of cyclists using the path. It's east of the junction with the path down to the golf course. Given almost all people use this turn-off it won't capture them; just the smaller number heading to/from the tram stop.
Stickman - Are you taking about the grey box at the East end of the Pinkhill platform?
I think it has always been there but it definitely looks like it has been newly uncovered/visited.
I counted 3 sets of loops in the ground (black outlines of a rectangle with a corner cut off). The westernmost one of these is before the ramp down the hill, so I think it is being covered.
Yes, that's the one.
I didn't notice the loops - will have a closer look tomorrow.
The counter at Edinburgh Quay doesn't register my passing any more - wonder if the sensors are needing calibrated. As I cycled towards it at the weekend it was at 49 and both me and a lady walking towards me looked in anticipation but nope; nothing.
Crestfallen. It does mean the counter is not feeding an accurate account back to whoever this info goes. Where does it go and what do they do with it?
My son and his mate added 50 to the one at Peters Yard last Saturday by jumping up and down for a minute or two......
The one on the Pinkhill path was removed a year or two ago. Now it is put back. I think it has 2 induction loops, one for the path to Balgreen , the other on the ramp down to Glendevon / on-road route to Roseburn. So maybe it keeps 2 counts...
by jumping up and down for a minute or two
you don't even need to jump, you can achieve the same by just walking heavy-footed along the strips, with one foot on each.
eddie_h: yes, the loops at Pinkhill are exactly as you described. They aren't as prominent as the ones at Roseburn, so probably why I didn't notice them until you pointed them out.
Seemed to be a new counter on the Broomhouse path but not the fancy type with displays.
One on Portobello Prom by the sailing club?
@Nelly I think I spotted the Harrison Park counter on the way home last night; if so it is on the towpath, just to the east of the long bridge between the bits of park.
If that *is* one on the Prom in Porty, it's also badly placed. Lots of folk turn off at Bath Street, to head into Porty.
Looks like another counter is going on NMW at the north-east corner of the tennis courts. A huge truck was parked on the bicycle path nearby, along with a couple of smaller vehicles. They was some obvious damage to the grass right next to the work. The Innocent to Meadows route appears to be coming along relatively quickly just around the corner.
Noticed the one on Whitehouse Loan today (NOT near the Bike Co-op).
Seemed to only have detectors a few from the kerb (double black lines).
If so, won't be counting me very often as turn right into Blackford Road and coming back turn right at the bottom of the hill so will usually be well over towards the middle if there's nothing coming down WL when I turn left from Blackford Road.
There's one in Roseburn park.
@chdot agreed, I cycled past (i.e. not over) both the counters on Whitehouse Loan yesterday. Is there someone this should get reported to? I'd hate to think all my cycle journeys along that route weren't getting counted!
I cycled up/down Whitehouse Loan 4 times yesterday and didn't notice these at all, which is surprising as the road surface is so bad there I'm looking down more than looking forward. I'll be going along it again tonight disguised as a runner so shall keep my eyes peeled.
@condor2378 I've given up with the poor surface part of Whitehouse Loan. These counters are at the nicely surface southern end between Blackford Road and Newbattle Terrace.
@Luath, ahh gotcha. I proceed down Canaan lane so technically should still be going over them, though this time at speed so eyes forward and not down, which is why I might have missed them.
Oh, I forgot to mention that another counter seems to have popped up on NMW along the section west of MMW.
Council have made the cycle counter data available. Have fun, data geeks!
http://data.edinburghopendata.info/dataset/bike-counter-data-set-cluster
The data collected seems unreliable. Even the Middle Meadow Walk is barely clocking over 100 counts a day and it has many days with 0 recorded counts.
The numbers at Edinburgh Quay have seemed very low (compared to usual) for the last few days. I was wondering why given weather remains fair.
@Klaxon that seems strange. I rarely see it without at least a couple of hundred counts by half eight ish in the mornings, and it is usually well over 1000 going on 2000+ in the evenings mid-week. Perhaps it is not communicating the collected data successfully back to the central hub?
That is an object lesson in how not to share data. The data set I had a look at seems to end in 2013 and there's no hint at what four of the fields signify. Nor can I tell where on the long named street the counter might be.
Data without context are just numbers, not information. And CSV files are the work of the devil. The data will be in queryable format already somewhere and I resent having to build them back into that form after they've been mangled through CSV. Harumph.
Jdaniel: this isn't the big one with the display. It's a waist height anonymous grey box.
Iwrats: It does explain the data format a wee bit
Counters come in the form of two-sensor or four-sensor depending on width required to cover. Data is then recorded at hourly intervals for each sensor to the file.
It's really not unlikely that the data collection is actually done in CSV. This will be a simple embedded computer with limited storage and processing power. With these limitations it's easy and space efficient to write a line to a file once an hour. I work with a system at work that records each event in CSV and use a vendor supplied tool to filter and search.
What I've not seen is anything stating the direction of each sensor (so yes after all that I agree it's not that useful a data set, but easily fixed)
Ah yes, I should have looked further up.
