Mentioned in new report to committee -

Also known as contra-flow cycle lanes.

There aren't that many in Edinburgh, some worse than others...

(The one in Lady Lawson St. has been 'coming' for 30 years!)

    Hill Place.
    East Crosscauseway.
    Erm...

As UtrechtCyclist says, Leamington Road would be handy. Canning/Rutland? Stafford? Rose, even?

    Sciennes House Place

And everyone's favourite, the fabulously-over-engineered-and-leads-you-on-a-road-to-nowhere one at Eyre Place / Rodney Street.

Does a one-way exemption have to involve a cycle lane. Or can they just write 'except cyclists' on the one way sign. This is what happens in Utrecht, don't know whether it's legal/ a good idea here.

Sciennes house Place is like that. A wee sign at either end telling you it's allowed. Unfortunately leads to conflict with motor vehicles who assume you're coming the wrong way against a one way and in my experience have on occassion taken passive aggressive driving position to try and impede your perfectly legal progress.

    West Newington Place.
    Queen Charlotte Street.
There is a worrying suggestion that it would have to involve a daft wee island, which is the £50k blown right away.

Hill/Young/Thistle Streets' traffic flows are all low enough to make them worth at least trying them with contraflow cycling. Circus Lane?

"Would it include admin/legal-wrangling fees, if TROs are required?"
Under the proposed new sign regs, I think contraflow wouldn't need a TRO. see TSRGD 2015 What will it do for cycling? But the new regs are now expected to have to wait until after the election.

Caanan Lane. Possibly the longest contraflow?

    HOWEVER -

    One Edinburgh contra-flow was removed!

    "

    Main report

    2. A Traffic Regulation Order was made in September 2000 to restrict traffic to one way in Forbes Road. The road was narrow and heavily parked and was not considered capable of sustaining two way traffic without causing congestion. The original proposal had been for a more extensive one-way system, including BruntsfieldGardens, butthiswas reducedfollowinglocalconsultations.

    3. The Council’s Local Transport Strategy (Chapter 12C1) states:
“There will be a presumption in favour of new traffic management schemes always incorporatingmeasuresfor cyclists, particularly:...exemptionsfrom road closures and new one-way streets.”

    4. In accordance with the above policy, cyclists were exempt from the one-way system. ARoadSafetyAuditoftheproposedsystemsuggestedthatatraffic island be provided at the southern end of the one way system to protect cyclists. The system is illustrated in Appendix I .

    5. A number of complaints about the operation of the system were received in the Department following its introduction and the matter was raised at the City Development Neighbourhood Group for Marchmont, Sciennes, Merchiston and North Morningside. The Group expressed the view that the contra-flow route was not safe for cyclists, due to it being narrow, with poor sight-lines for drivers on the curve and the fact that drivers did not expect to encounter cyclists coming in the opposite direction. It was reported that the Bruntsfield Primary PTA were advising parents not to allow children to use the route.

It could have made safer by removing a couple of parking spaces on the bend. But...

    "MARYFIELD PLACE"

Definite candidate for an 'except cyclists' sign. Happens anyway, de facto this is the way the street is used. Handy safer route to cut up to London Road from Easter Road, without risking being crushed by left turning vehicles at the top of Easter Road. Can turn straight into a bus lane instead, far preferable.

@paddyirish, Unless I'm missing something I think Cammo walk might only be one way at the extreme southern end and two way for the rest of it's length. As far as I'm aware Farm vehicles coming out of the fields can always go north along it.

Duncan Street would be my first choice. It is currently a "missing link" in a nice quiet route from Holyrood Park through the Grange towards Morningside. I feel safer using that the "wrong way" than using the alternatives.

You've not been interpreting the road signs and markings correctly paddyirish (and nor do the motorists who carelessly turn at the corner).

Cammo Walk is two way for all traffic throughout its length. But only bikes may enter from the south end. You've never met the farmer going about his business have you?

    @acsimpson Blueth

I stand corrected. Have probably ridden that bit of road a few hundred times in both directions and have never met traffic heading NW beyond the car park. Prior to having read your posts I'd have probably had a cardiac incident if I did...

Thinking about it have seen the odd vehicle parked in the flattish area at field entrances and seen tractors in the fields, but never thought about how they got there and got out...

Out of interest, would a one-way exemption require a TRO? I remember hearing somewhere that they might start some of the contraflow cycle lanes included in the CCWEL early.

Passing through Rutland Sqaure pretty often I wouldn't mind not having to dismount every time when I'm coming from Shandwick Place...

Yes, pretty sure that'd need a TRO. So I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if they actually did that, as they're probably including it in the TROs for the rest of the project.

How illegal would it be to buy some "Except cycles" signs, get some paint and create some contraflows?

    Asking for a friend.

Fine, as long as they weren’t off the back of a lorry...

On the urban rural divide my mate in cambridge observed a distinction that in Scotland the money is more in the city and rural areas are less affluent (broadly) whereas in England the money is all in the villages and the cities are poor. Whereas in Cambridge the money is in th villages and the money is in the city.

@gembo, not sure that rule applies to Perthshire, Aberdeenshire or East Lothian...

@CycleAlex, such supplementary signs can be ordered online here for less than £30 each. "You WILL need the rear channels for fixing to a post".

Logan Pl in Kensington is now two way for bikes.

It’s the street Freddie Mercury stayed in.

Saves me looping the block if I… happen to go past.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE!

I do that by cycling along Canning Street towards Shandwick Place including the 20 yards or so of one-way. In my mind's eye I can see the contraflow which any sane road policy would have to link the WAR to Shandwick Place. There's a secure car and cycle park under the buildings on Exchange Crescent, so this is reasonably busy.

I understand that a contraflow is in some plans somewhere.

@Rosie I was thinking of Shandwick Place - Rutland Square. I would cycle the wrong way but there's a tad too many taxis that come flying around the corner. Erm, I mean my friend was thinking of...

At least CCWEL will be bring in a contraflow on Canning Street, Rutland Street, Coates crescent and quite a few others. Should be done by the end of the year if all goes well!

CEC awarded funding for design work/TROs on an initial tranche of one-way exemptions. Hopefully start to see some appearing soon.
