Please complete our survey for your local supermarket. If you use more than one supermarket, please complete the survey once for each that you use. We suggest that before you complete the survey you read it, then have a look at your supermarket before completing it. If possible please complete the survey by end of March.

Done for the ScotMid and Morrisons on Gorgie Road. (The other supermarket we use is the Murrayfield Sainsbury's, but I can't remember what the bike parking at the front is like, because we always go in the back entrance. I'll see if I can take a look.)

Duke Street/Unction Street Tesco, Bernard Sainsbury and Lidl Kirkgate done. Will do more non-local but frequently-used ones later, like Meadowbank and Asda Newhaven and its mystery cycle sign.
If anyone else does Westfield Sainsbury be sure to mention the unpleasantness of locking/unlocking a bike in the waft-zone of the staff on fagbreaks.

Going to do Tesco Broughton Road, seeing as it has an unbolted rack at the moment...

I have submitted questionnaires for Scotmid & Sainsburys on Marchmont Rd, Scotmid on Marchmont Crescent, new ALDI on Gilmerton Road, and Sainsburys superstore at Longston (which has covered space for 60 bikes, just a pity it's not signposted)

I've done Tesco at Colinton Mains and Morrisons at Hunters Tryst.

Some other cycle parking-equipped supermarchés to do:

    Waitrose at Morningside
    Sainsbury's at Morningside
    Scotmid at Tollcross
    Tesco at Holy Corner
    Sainsbury's at Cameron Toll

I've now done Waitrose at Morningside, Scotmid at Leven St/Tollcross and Tesco Metro at Holy Corner.

Photos also sent in for these three and Tesco at Colinton Mains Drive.

Took photographs this morning of the Morrisons at Hunters Tryst and had a chat with one of the store managers. He knew of Spokes, so I pointed him towards the survey.

As well as 4 Sheffield stands there are two wheelbender racks, massive triangular things that take six bikes each. They're so often used for advertising banners that I'd forgotten they were there when I did the questionnaire.

Covered the area roughly north of Queensferry Road, Princes Street and Portobello Road over the last couple of days - 29 stores.

Did Sainsbury's (Large: Craigleith, St Andrew Sq, Meadowbank. Locals: Stockbridge, Howe St, Bernard St) Tesco (Large: Broughton Road, Duke St. Express: Princes St, Picardy Place, Brunswick Place/Leith Walk, Gt. Junction St) Morrison's (Large: Waterfront Granton, Ferry Road, Portobello Road) Waitrose (Large: Comely Bank) ASDA (Large: Leith) LIDL (Large: Newkirkgate, West Granton Road) Scotmid (All small/medium: Boswall Parkway,Granton Road, Lindsay Road Leith, Ferry Road Leith, 2 on Leith Walk, Easter Road, Restart Road South)

Conclusions on bike parking provision. Some egregiously poor examples in the big stores (Tesco Duke St - none. Tesco Broughton Road - very difficult to use. Sainsbury's Meadowbank - totally inadequate for size of store. Morrison's Portobello Road - rubbish, just butterfly wheel benders at the back. LIDL West Granton Road - 3 butterfly stands attached to trolley store).

Some of the stores did quite well elsewhere (except Tesco) so they can do it. (Morrison's Waterfront - very good. Sainsbury's Craigleith and St Andrew Sq - pretty good. LIDL Newkirkgate - pretty good if a bit hidden.) ASDA Leith also good.

Scotmid were all small/medium stores and apart from Boswall Road - 3 Sheffield stands, and Granton Road - 3 nasty butterfly stands, no others had any provision.

Tesco Duke St - none." The Tesco superstore in Leith has bike parking in the car park as far as recall.

It does not have bike parking on the duke street entry.

If the criteria is a supermarket has to have bike parking at every entrance some others would fail too, ALDI in Gorgie has no bike parking at the back entry.

    ASDA Leith also good"

ASDA Leith has no bike parking at the back in the car park. If you go at night you have to park at the front and walk all the way round. Like Tesco Leith, it does not have bike parking at both entrances.

One is rated good the other no parking , why because one has a street name for one entrance? Seems an arbitrary distinction, if they named the street at the back of asda or took the name away from duke street the practicalities would still be the same-)

I find Tesco duke street no parking better for chaining my bike than Asda back door no parking.

Had a swatch at the plans to convert the empty B&Q store on Easter Road to a LiDL. Looks like they plan 3 x Sheffield stands (or similar) at 1m intervals by the front door of the shop.

@Ed1 Thanks for feedback. This was a summary on my part. I went into more detail on the forms.

But I stand by my assessment for Duke St Tesco. There is a strange looking 'bay' at the back which could be used to lock bikes to, but it isn't designed as a bike park, isn't signed as such, looks more like a trolley park (has a mini road hump to stop trolleys rolling out), and finally isn't very easy to use as a bike park, so Duke St gets a 'no facilities at all' from me. As for ASDA, I made the same point as you about the inconvenience when the front door closes at 8pm, but for the rest of the time it's good.

Spokes could initiate a similar survey of DIY stores as well

In my experience there are never any cycle parking facilities.

In my experience there are never any cycle parking facilities.

B&Q at Hermiston Gait has good covered Sheffield stands by the door, Homebase at St. Leonards has Sheffield Stands in the open outside the door, but often used as an area to display bulk stock for sale. Homebase at Craigleith has nothing, B&Q at Powderhall has nothing except 2 tiny wheelholders (1 broken) that look like they're more meant for a dog to tie up to. Homebase at Straiton I think has nothing. Can't say I've ever cycled to B&Q at Newcraighall to test it.

B&Q at Newcraighall has some nice D-lock-compatible roof-support strut things by the disabled parking bays near the exit, but as I always use them I don't know if they still have some proper cycle racks at the other end, just where the wall of the building becomes the fence of the garden/outside bit.

Wickes at Gorgie/Murrayfield has no bike parking whatsoever.

Very poor permeability / no pedestrian access from Westfield Rd as well (and there is no need for this as it is simply blocked by a low wooden barrier / flower bed)

I don't know if they still have some proper cycle racks at the other end

I think those racks are still there. More amazingly I think they might have been made accessible again. Last time I cycled there with my trailer the racks were blocked by patios and fences and trolleys and gardeny stuff. Homebase at St Leonards got my business that day.

Wickes at Gorgie/Murrayfield has no bike parking whatsoever

You're probably supposed to park your bike at the Sainsbury's and hoof it across the road. I didn't bother, I just wheeled my bike straight into Wickes. There was little danger of skewering anyone with the chainring because I was about the only customer.

Looks like the beginning of a survey. Spokes person! Should we use the form on this thread to survey diy stores too?

"If possible please complete the survey by end of March" (first post)

I'd just put the DIY stores in too.

Spokes can ignore if they choose to.

would love to know how many of their entries are from CCE-ers. at one point they said 80ppl had responded, but since form only allows one shop per entry, I presume they meant '80 entries'. I know I put in 3 or 4, and quite a few of you seem to have as well, which I make about 20 respondents. figure 10 of them are on here?
