Bikezac - mini review

So I've been saying for AGES that we needed to find a way to turn our collection of reusable shopping bags into panniers - and now someone's done it. In particular, what I wanted was a pannier that could go inside another pannier without taking up all the space - like I carry a small shopping bag with my wallet, keys etc.

So, when someone on Ravelry pointed out the 'Bikezac' at the copenhagen bike show, I was keen to try one. It arrived speedily!

Here's a picture of what the empty bag looked like on my bike when it arrived:

But really the idea is to carry the bag _inside my main pannier_, so that when I want to stop in at the shops after work, I actually have room to carry my groceries homes. So, here's the bikezac folded up in my 'work' pannier':

I had a dentist appointment over in Bellevue, and wasn't planning on shopping, but on the way home I thought 'I could stop at Craigleith'! So I stopped and bought all sorts of random stuff.

Here's the bike at Craigleith sainsbury's with full pannier:

Here you can see what I fit in it: bagels, cereal, two lots of pierogis, buttermilk, and lots of crap

The ride home went well. No heel strike, which I was really worried about. Nice and easy to lift off the bike and carry around, unlike most panniers. I really like the simple hooks - they may not be to everyone's taste. They did feel very secure though.

Perhaps a bigger question is how durable it will prove. But wouldn't it be cool to be able to just buy a pannier with your shopping in M&S or Waitrose?

Looks like a nice idea. How does it attach? Hooks or some sort of velcro straps?

Is there any reinforcement inside the bag on the side that sits against the frame?

I love the idea of supermarkets hitting on panniers, alas I don't think any of our lot give that much of a damn about cycling shoppers if their stores are anything to go by.

Hooks. There is a plastic strip across the top which the hooks are attached to.

There isn't anything else to give it structure or reinforcement.

It's not going to carry heavy loads like regular panniers, but it will be very handy for light shopping. I'll probably keep it folded up under the spring-thing on my rack.

I should have put a link to the company and our original discussion.

    Clarifies/discusses some of those issues.

So I've been using this for the last few weeks....

    - the design is really good. It's easy to fold up and put inside another bag or just hook on to the rack when folded up
    - it holds a fair bit, although I wouldn't trust a heavy load in it
    - it makes a disconcertingly loud rustle when used in a high wind. The first few times I thought it had actually blown off, but it's secure on the hooks

    But....

    - I noticed today that the material was starting to split on the bottom. I may have overfilled it, but I'm going to look out for reviews to see if others have the same problem.

McNett seam grip is a glue for fixing tent rips that I have used to good effect on my old ortliebs. I definitely overfill them.

I've been using the IKEA blue bags (the ones you can carry stuff away in) on the Brompton, looped on to the handlebars like a bar bag.

Have also got a neat reuseable bag with stiffening that folds down to a 5" square less than 0.5" thick. Must get a picture.

I experimentally augmented one of my bags for life this evening, to save me having to loop the handles round the top of the rack to be retained by the flap of my proper pannier:

I usually only have to employ it when I need to buy boxes of cereal, so stiffening has not been necessary so far. When I get round to Vaudeing my Union34 bag I might use the Union34 clip on this.

I'd be considering modifying a jute bag in a similar fashion. Let us know how it goes.

One pleasing discovery is that the square nuts from the M5 roofing bolt/nut pack I'd picked up somewhere when I needed a long M5 bolt to fix the bike seat exactly fit the channel between the vertical flange bits on the rear of the Vaude hooks, resulting in nice tight clamping of the handle fabric either side of the (heat-sealed) hole, hopefully reducing the strain thereupon.

Bikezacs are available from the New Leaf Co-op, 23 Argyle Place, just up from the Bicycle Works.

sadly have to report that my bikezac is no longer usable.

a tear in the bottom didn't cause much trouble (although I usually tried to put stuff in another bag, and then inserting that into bikezac. however, today i may have overloaded it with a full load of groceries including a whole chicken and two big tubs of yogurt. i got home and discovered I only had one pannier! slight panic as I thought I'd have to retrace my entire route, but I found it just outside. the kerb up to our front door was clearly too much for it, and one of the hooks broke.

Still going. A bit frayed where it sometimes bumps the wheel, but still used in emergencies.
