Thanks for the heads-up. Going that way tonight on the ride home so I'll be ready to take avoiding action rather than assuming it's been swept away!

NEPN GLASS warning

So here's the thing...
@greenroofer & I just spent our lunch hours talking to colleagues about starting to cycle to work.
Lots of nervousness about finding a safe route so we had a spokes map and a laptop on cyclestreets website ready to show options.
Quite a few of the people were looking to come from the North of the City so NEPN to Roseburn and then Family Network 9 to the West.
If you experienced cyclists are avoiding this stretch because of the risk of punctures etc, how can I recommend it to newbies? And without that link there is no route suitable for a first timer.
Sorting these things really matters if we are going to get more cycling...

I'm in Davidson's Mains these days and haven't cycled along the Telford Path since around the time this thread started.
My route east is via Queensferry Rd and down Orchard Rd - but Queensferry Rd isn't for beginners as you need to be very aware of cars trying to overtake in limited space.
Pity there isn't a cycle lane prior to Craigleith.

The existence of glass on the route hasn't yet stopped me from using the route. Eventually this foolhardiness will catch up with me, but the same goes for the road.

I would say that the fact that there are so many people using the NEPN at commuter times makes it very safe. You're lucky to not see a dozen bikes every few minutes if you stand still. Puncture proof tyres and keeping an eye on the road should make it fine. There is a lot of dog mess though!

Dog poops doing my head in just now. Thinking of mocking up some "Innerpoop Network" signs to stick up at various positions of high offending.
"Edinburgh's premier mass public dog toilet. Take only dogs, leave only turds. Someone else will clean it up, so why not just leave it where it is or hang it in a bag on a branch? Tell your irresponsible, dog-owning friends."

Yeah but newbies will just use whatever bike they have rotting in the garage/shed. Having a bad experience in their first week will soon put them off.

yup, and imagine if you encourage them to cycle, they get a puncture and it makes them late for work...

@kaputnik Have you noticed the SIZE of the things? What kind of monster hell-hound is depositing them? They're human-sized and last night you could smell them as you slalomed between each foetid pile :-(

@dougal Same here. I used to ride Ferry Road from Leith to Crewe Toll as part of my morning and evening commutes to Edinburgh Park. However, the road surface homeward got so bad a few years ago (I reckon it was what eventually cracked by frame) that I took to riding the the path home instead.
Certainly a lot safer now than it was when I first started cycling in 2006, and you'd rarely see another cyclist during rush hour!

@srd: We'll find out soon enough. Doing a guided ride in to work next week with a newbie who'll be coming from Ferry Rd to Roseburn.
Fingers crossed it's a good experience for them.

Not exactly on NEPN, but on one of the approach streets: broken glass on the road on Corbiehill Ave, shortly before turn off to the bridge over NEPN.
Here's the street view approximation:

PS I've tweeted @north_team

Lots of green glass on NEPN just to the Leithward side of the red bridge (about three or four bottles of stellas worth). Saw a few people fixing punctures this morning. Would any twitterer mind reporting it.

@BaseCut done
Posted 9 years ago # -
Reported it this morning too. Totally forgot to do so after I got home last night (as I was distracted immediately by the arrival of a new camera!).
Thankfully I was warned by a cyclist coming over the red bridge that there was plenty of glass, so was able to dismount and walk past it all.

Still there tonight. I've had no response from my tweet to the North Team this morning - you heard anything, @dougal?
Posted 9 years ago # -
I tweeted it too. No reply :(
Doubtless the north team Twitter guy's on hols?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Got a response this evening, twitter problem apparently so tweet took 8h to reach them. I know I was out of town when I sent it but still...
Report #187496 as urgent.

oops. i got reply too - had just tweeted it from a different account. hopefully it doesn't take until Monday to get fixed.
we walked w-o-l from Leith to Cannonballs yesterday and there were lots of happy people out on bikes.

@SRD That's a great autocorrect!
Posted 9 years ago # -
All the glass still there this morning.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I got the same 'Twitter problems' reply on Friday. Hopefully they'll clear it at some point today.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Saw a kind-hearted soul use a leafy branch to clear the glass off the path last night. Shocking that the council have been so slow.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Ah, I wondered who'd done it. They did a good job - was largely clear.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I've replied to the tweet reply from the North Team last week to let them know that after waiting for too long a path user did their job for them.
Still, all that glass will now be in the grassy verge, ready to shred Rover's paws :-(

Loads this morning on the Hawthornvale path just by the double concrete steps. Most of it now in the grass at the side, but still enough bits to warrant being careful. @north_team tweeted but I'll FixMyStreet it too.

I hope they respond a bit more quickly than they've (not) responded to my reporting all those little stones at the Craigleith junction.
7 days later, they've done jack.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I've had no response to any tweets sent the last time (a month ago), nor on any other matter raised with them since.
I think they've given up.
Posted 9 years ago # -
This is mere yards from two van-access points, so it could be done without anyone having to leave the safety of their van for too long, nor lug a heavy brush too far. I had a tweet to acknowledge receipt and the standard automated receipt notice from Clarence after FixMyStreeting it but shall not be going that way for the next few days unless I've my brush in my pannier.
Posted 9 years ago # -
No glass on the Roseburn-GrantonAccess section this evening but there was a sandbag and a pile of sticks under one of the bridges, which I reckon I was not the first person to encounter this evening, though I would have been the last.
