More non-glass NEPN hazards: four or five stacks of tyres between the sculpture centre and the bridge under Newhaven Road. All in the middle of the path at the moment with space to pass either side, but unlikely to remain do for long, oaves being oaves.

It's a strange one, the tyres were very neatly stacked in a line down the middle of the path, clearly not just thrown off the back of a lorry.

On the plus side the tyres have stalled the flow of construction vehicles along the path.

A sculpture installation trying to escape?

I saw these this morning, have they been put there to stop work traffic?

Lots of glass on the NEPN this morning between Drylaw and the Red Bridge. More than I've ever seen before. Mostly clear glass.

Gang of trainee-jail birds at the same location terrorising passing cyclists by blocking the whole width of the path and jumping/kicking out at those passing.

I'm done with that path. (Even though, given I live in D Mains, it would be really useful.)

And I'm getting pretty close to being done with cycling altogether.

No glass between Hawthornvale and Roseburn by 0915 on Friday. Good reporting and quick sweeping.

Yep, well done to the reporters and the council for getting that lot cleaned up quickly.

I hope people aren't too put off using the path by the neds. I cycle that route a lot and I've never experienced any trouble directly and only very rarely felt threatened. Compare that with the road network...

I swept all that glass off on the way to work. Not to take anything away from the doubtless highly efficient north team :)

Some of us are. If it's after dark, or holiday time, I treat it as a no-go area and use the roads instead. I find most motorists aren't actively trying to kill you.

And you should be put off it. It's only a matter of time until there's a serious incident. (Assuming there hasn't been already.)

I won't go along there in the dark. I use the roads, which aren't so busy at night anyway.

I've had one guy playing chicken with me so I had to swerve - and that wasn't in the neddy area but near Groathill.

There are certainly increasing problems with the path. The Easter Drylaw Park to Red Bridge stretch is the worst I find for glass, litter and neds. That said, I've been along it twice a day on weekdays for the last 4 years or so and have only once been directly targeted (for which I involved the police). Maybe I've been lucky. I went through town (Craiglockhart to Leith) this morning, because the glass was so bad on the NEPN last night and I was almost side swiped by a car on Howe St and overall found it much more threatening and less fun than the NEPN.

Thanks for that Dave. I misplaced the mini-brush I normally carry and have been meaning to look for it for the last couple of days.

As a daily user of this path I would also hope that folk aren't put off using this route. A member of one such "gang" had a little shout at me once for daring to smile to myself as I cycled past them once. There are usually lots of pedestrians and cyclists around and I find being polite when trying to get past the very rare large group on the path has always worked for me.

I have had way more dangerous situations with drivers just on Forrest Road than on the entirety of the NEPN.

Tyres that can withstand glass are essential though.

I don't really find the neds to be a problem but that's just me. I find it's generally effective to pretend not to be paying attention (nobody plays chicken with someone they think hasn't seen them) but I can see it would be a bit tiresome.

SWMBO has a weekly evening activity down off Ferry Rd and she would never ride the NEPN, instead she just drives (along the A90 and down parallel with the path). It's that thing again - having a good segregated path is necessary for a good modal share by bike, but it's not sufficient. (We already had this discussion in parallel about the deserted upper stretches of the WoL path)

I was going to say that it is notable that the people who are talking about being put off are female - but I don't think gibbo is?
I'm not quite sure which bit of the NEPN we are referring to - it isn't a route I tend to need to use in the evenings apart from the bit from Russell Road to Ravelston Dykes. I've come back from Ferry Road after an evening meeting a couple of times and that was OK.

I'm not. I've had little trouble myself, but there's clearly a danger when the path is

    (A) Not policed and doesn't have CCTV.

    (B) Goes through a bad part of town.

    (C) Is a hang out point for gangs of youths looking for trouble

    (D) Covered by broken glass, tacks and other objects designed to damage tyres.

Too many red flags for my tastes.

I've been using the NEPN pretty much daily for over 17 years. I haven't really had a major problem with it in all that time. Maybe a handful of minor incidents. Having said that, if I were female I wouldn't use it at night.

It is most definitely when the schools are on holiday that the real trouble arises, usually around 5pm. I have also been using this route since before the section from Wardie Rd to Victoria Park etc was completed and it's really only in the last year or two when there's been ned trouble with them jumping at me or wheelieing their bikes at me as I pass (at the Drylaw-red bridge section)

Lots of glass at 11pm this eve on the "iron girder" bridge (North of the Red Bridge), and some between those bridges.

The Red bridge was ok, but quite a bit more under the next (Telford?) Bridge just past the Drylaw exit.

There is always some glass, but this seemed "more than the usual amount".

I've been cycling daily along the NEPN for coming up to 10 years now. There are a couple of cheeky lads but nothing serious. If anything, I feel it's much safer now - fewer feral dogs, fewer neds and so many more cyclists about.

A load at the Five ways end of the Chancelot Path, and a bit more a bit west on the main east-west path, whatever it's called at that point. Kicked off a bit but had no brush and a piglet in a seat.

Today's patch of glass is on the Blackhall path.

Two different colours (clear and coloured) and spread across the path - so looks like deliberate sabotage.

Where you'll find it: about 3/4 lampposts south east of where the ramp from Corbiehill Ave joins the path.

What I've done: I kicked most of the glass into the verges, but there'll still be bits.

What I recommend: stick to the south west side of the path at that point and you should be ok.

    Any questions: let me know.

I feel the need to invest in a brush. Maybe an ordinary broom with the handle sawn in half

@neddie_h A wallpaper-paste brush is very useful for glass and fits easily in most bags.
