Will Ian Murray be new leader of Scottish Labour then. Jimurphy can't stay on surely?

""looks like Scottish independence is pretty much a given now"

    Really?"

Indeed. At the referendum a lot of No voters were Conservatives who hadn't bothered voting at GEs in Scotland as they felt there was no point. Last night a lot of Labour and LibDems will have made the same calculation.

50% voted for the SNP. So still around 50% against independence, even voting against a forecast total landslide.

Well he 'saved' Hearts so perhaps looking for bigger challenge??

    "Jimurphy can't stay on surely?"

Surprising how many people saying 'well he only took over recently, and perhaps couldn't have been expected to change things much'. It's certainly that true that Labour in Scotland has had problems for longer than the Referendum run-up and aftermath, but...

@stickman. I think that part the calculus there is that 4 years of Tory rule from down south will convert more to Indy. Certainly seen people saying that on twitter.

There will be plenty of people who just voted SNP who didn't vote Yes and might not vote Yes if Ref2 was tomorrow.

A lot will depend on how the 'Smith powers' are delivered (and what the consequences are).

I thought the referendum had shown that social media wasn't a good indicator of the real position!

I agree that 5 years of Conservatives could have that effect. Equally, 5 years of proper scrutiny of the SNP under a UK lens may have the opposite effect. The LibDems found out the hard way that it's easy to make noises about what you would do in power. (I know the SNP aren't in power, but being in a position to be the deciding vote at Westminster will force some hard decisions for them)

    Interesting times.

Some very good constituency MPs have been lost.

So we've voted out someone whose only experience was in student politics and Westminster Labour politics. And we've voted in someone whose only experience is student politics. A true revolution is underway.

Sorry, I'm being snarky. Lack of sleep, but not from election watching - had to take my cat to the emergency vet last night and he's back at our own vet this morning. Sickly pets aren't good. :-(

True. I put that there mainly because one of the people in question posts on here...

Of course, I voted Yes in #indyref and for Ian Murray yesterday....

Very sorry to hear about your cat. Hope he's doing better soon.

"Of course, I voted Yes in #indyref and for Ian Murray yesterday"

Given both results in Ed S, a lot of other people must have done the same.

    And many No/Murray.

There can be no doubt that IndyRef made people think about 'politics'.

Perhaps now there will be more 'thought' about PR for future UK elections.

Caroline Lucas said 'we'll work with anyone' when asked if she could work with UKIP on PR.

Might be something for some SNP MPs to help with (might keep them out of mischief...)

I just read somewhere that SNP have 95% of the seats for 50% of the vote, maybe now if effects the major parties we can get rid of FPTP.

If they did that, they'd never have a majority ever again.

I fear that a Conservative majority is the main blocker to electoral reform - the current system works for them, so why would they change it?

Labour will be more inclined to look to reform now - on the basis of the drubbing they've received, they will have to do a lot of soul searching as to how they get back on the map in the south of England and in Scotland. I suspect that if some form of PR had been in place Ed Balls would still be in Westminster.

I guess it will take a Labour manifesto pledge (for all they're worth) and then a subsequent Labour victory in the next election to actually get PR implemented.

Tories now have an effective majority, given Sinn Fein don't take their seats and the Speaker is non-political.

That could be good news- they will have nobody to blame but themselves for unpopular/unsuccessful policies.

Give the history for backbench bickering over Europe, the whips will have to earn their corn. Hopefully they won't be up to the task.

A man out of time and out of vision?

    Jim Murphy has not resigned.

Plan is to build on Ian Murray's sound result? Seems odd though. Doesn't feel right.

Another own goal for Scottish Labour. Will he face a challenge though? Being seen as Milliband's man is not a good way to start the recovery...
