Note that the headline had to use inverted commas around the word smartest.

and it wouldn't be a chipwrapper article without a quote from Neil "I'm Advanced" Greig.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: “It’s about making it as simple and easy as possible to park in
Edinburgh. The problem is that you’ve had so much disruption in the city centre over the last few years and I think people are still confused over the layout.

“What it needs is a bit of a settled period and no changes for a while in the city centre.”

Well Neil, if they were that smart they wouldn't have tried to drive into the city centre.

Presumably the GPS-connectedness of 'smart' drivers leads to dependency, which is why they drive into bollards.

Perhaps the programmers of GPS devices and parking apps could enable their wares to interpret a route-plus-parking-space request to a city centre location as "drive to park and ride. park. get bus." if so much time is spent finding a space in the centre itself?

The article says that it takes around nine minutes to park in Edinbugh despite the use of 'smart' tech! That sounds ridiculous to me as a non-driver, but I suppose that it would be relatively easy for drivers to justify it compared to waiting for a bus/tram in each direction.
