Talking trucks

    Not seen any other topics on this, but could be old news

    A few days ago i saw council rubbish truck/lorry stopped at the lights indicating to turn down into murieston gardens. as well as the indicators there was a speaker broadcasting "vehicle turning left".

    seems a good idea (won't help folk who listen to music with headphones when cycling though!). fair play to the council for trying out new things and if it prevents some left hooks it can only be a good thing. only seen the truck just once but it didn't seem brand new so it might be out and about for a couple of months already

    So it's an extra type of indicator for drivers to not use?

    Largely discredited, especially when it is taken to work the same way as indicating "I'm turning left with this truck so get out of the way because I'll use this as a further excuse to say I warned you I was going to drive my truck through the bit of road you were using...."

    Given that left hooks are entirely the result of incompetent driving I don't see how it could help reduce the number. Although if it's fitted in conjunction with proximity sensors then I suppose it would let you know the driver should have a warning about your presence.

    One time it may be useful would be if you filtered past a truck which hadn't yet remembered to use it's indicators and latterly turned it on without you noticing. I think I would agree with Tulyar though that there is a risk it would be used to victim blame.
