Some good news from the Transport office:

"After a year of planning our contractor will be installing 80 sheffield cycle racks along the south and east side of George Square and 20 outside Informatics on Crichton Street. This will provide 200 cycle parking spaces. The contractor will start on 25th May and should be complete by 28th June."

Only problem is we could use twice that easily...

Good! The pavement to the south of the Informatics Forum is extremely wide - lots of room for racks. Hopefully they'll be normal ones rather than those twisty designer racks at the west side of Informatics.

the informatics ones have gone in - looking nice. slightly smaller than standard sheffields, but with middle bar, so i'm happy. they're opposite Appleton Tower.

and also a new set of 80 (i think) outside the library main entrance. hallelujah!

Need for ones at library must have been 'obvious' for years!

Apart from 'very full' railings, library must seen a lot of mud walked in.

The - mostly unusable - bike lockers on the north side of George Square have finally been removed and replaced by a large number of sheffields. This at least doubles our covered bike parking options. (I'd been asking for this to happen since my office moved to this side of the square - at least 8 years ago...)).

Unfortunately, the smokers like it too. However, transport office promises me that 2 a-boards will be installed demarcating it as a no-smoking area.

Yes, the smokers like our covered bike rack too (they are next to the front door, the smoking shelter is round the back of the building). It isn't that I object to someone smoking next to my precious bike, or think that they'll stub their cigarette out on the saddle, it is that I object to people DROPPING CIGARETTE STUBS EVERYWHERE. Grumble.

I asked for a no smoking sign. No, it would not look good, as it is right next to the front door. Then I asked if there could be a bin. No, because it is a no smoking area. So now I just passive-agressively put in requests for the mess to be cleared up every so often.

@fimm. that's appalling. the front door to our building has a big a-board saying 'no smoking'...which is why they all move a little further away to where the new bike racks are.

I think they think it is 'allowed' because someone put a bin there for their buts. the new boards may be a surprise....

We really could do with an updated Smoking and Public Health Act.

An unforeseen downside to the the original Act is that now you have to battle through a horrible fug of smoke whenever you go into or out of a pub (because the more thoughtless and uncaring junkies smoke as close to the pub doorway as they can get away with (often (illegally) in it, if it's raining), and, similarly, workers popping out for a smoke break often nip out the back door and light up right next to the ventilation intake, sucking fug right into the building.

We could really do with an update to the Act that also bans smoking within 5 metres of an entrance doorway or ventilation intake…

(And while I'm here, Edinburgh's bus shelter contract holder needs to get its act together and add the legally required "No Smoking" signs to most, if not all, of the new(ish) bus shelters…)

Is the north side of George Sq normally fully closed off during August? There were ratchet straps across one end when I went along earlier, and a barrier across the whole width of the road of Crichton Street.

@Frenchy - I think it's closed from 10:30am to the very early hours of the morning.

This has been the setup for the last 2 or 3 years (I think)

Thanks. Was 10am I went past today.

For first time in months, I noticed there were no vehicles on the pavement of Charles Street though. Clouds and silver linings and all that.
