Of course, it doesn't happen often but the person didn't even stop. At least they did hand themselves in later.

That really is horrific. I note that the cyclist appears to be travelling at the same speed as the traffic on the road.

  3. Poor kid, I fear if I was her dad I might now be on an assault charge myself.

Whatever weight the law has here, I hope he feels the full amount of it.

Absolutely awful. I'm so pleased the little girl appears to be okay after her dreadful experience.

I also fear this will now be used virally as representing the dangers that bicycles cause, no matter how many children are killed and maimed by motorised vehicles. I am not trying to diminish this mindless behaviour in any way, but it does show that even in such an awful incident and such a vulnerable victim, the result wasn't life-changing. If a car had hit her at that speed the result would have been much much worse.

I'm so angry with this man.

Really awful for the wee girl. I hope she recovers from the trauma quickly.

Failing to stop and check is pretty mindless/selfish. I hope the man is apprehended and punished or educated.

Like ih, I am not trying to diminish this mindless behaviour in any way, however...

Interesting that when motorists run over children on pavements (as drivers* are prone to do when they access/exit driveways), they write children's "road safety" books about it (e.g. Ziggy, targeted at children as young as 3).

These books advise children not to run on pavements and to hold an adult's hand. Running on a pavement is exactly the sort of thing a child wants to do and should be able to do (and they should be safe from all vehicles including cycles). These books put the onus on the child to be the one always looking out, rather than the driver and also encourages the child to lead a sedentary lifestyle. This surely is not the way forward.

Next Tuesday's "Call you and yours" on Radio 4 will host a call-in about whether "you have been put at risk by cyclists" following this incident.

I am glad the girl is ok, and I hope she's not too shaken by it - clearly this is awful behaviour by the cyclist in question…. but I have to admit to being a bit worried about the reaction to this. The title of that call-in already puts us all in the same group as the person in this video who was riding a bike. I find this sort of pavement cycling by adults inexcusable, but I am a "cyclist" as was the pavement "cyclist", so I imagine we'll all have to apologise for him.

How many programmes have their schedules changed following the daily toll of incidents involving motor vehicles?

Is there an equivalent of clickbait for radio?

Radio 4 "Call You and Yours" just trailed for 12.15 today. All the usual clichés on insurance, registration, training, on the subject, "have you ever been put at risk by cyclists?"

Chris Boardman is guest, so hopefully he can introduce some balance.
