Mmm, because licences and insurance have been so successful in stopping people being killed by motor vehicles.

Does this programme ever do pro-cycling though? Must admit I've never listened to it. General population is scared of cyclists so safe bet to go 'anti'. Run programme amplifying these fears and you get broad agreement from those listening (in their car). Cue fire storm of indignant bike users versus the 'people who pay for / wear out the roads' (myth)
There are no winners but you can bet programmes like these 'validate' giving cyclists a close pass or two.

No one should ever listen to You and Yours. It is the worst possible life experience.

It's the Daily Mail of Radio Four

Radio four is killer bee for the today programme and Eddie mair's PM, also does a good statistics programme. Occasionally a good piece of drama. Is this enough though to counter Moneybox, midweek with Libby purves, the food programme or worst of all The archers?

    @gembo

Eddie Mair is doing well, now that he's out of the thin shadow of Jackie Bird.

The worst possible human experience is novel format panel comedy game at 18h30 with drunk audience.

i've not seen her in much other than news quiz (and a couple of guys time team appearances) but have always found her good value and rarely annoying. Do you have similar problem with Susan Calman?

  11. Sandi Toksvig I adore. Saw her show at the Fringe (last year? Year before?) talking about her life, and it was fascinating. Horses for courses of course.

Susan Calman is also fantastically engaging (and very honest when talking about her struggle with depression and so on).

Most of the 6.30 comedy on R4 I like, except Claire in the Community, and the thing Richard K Amos did (such a shame, saw him doing stand up and he was wonderful). News Quiz and the Now Show do depend very much on who they have on.

    Stephen K Amos?

Susan Calman and sandi toksvig often appear on news quiz. I never liked the show before they starred in it.

Absolutely locating the issue of liking disliking a comedian (except maybe Jim Davidson) as personal taste of the audience member.

I admire the chutzpah of various performers. I feel some people like some performers and others do not.

    No big deal.

  13. Indeed (and aye, Stephen, doh!).

Gembs, you're possibly the most zen person I know...

I can stomach Henning Wehn. Toksvig only has one scandi-saphic gear but it's a good one.

For those who want something to read which they probably agree with:

Toksvig hosted her last news quiz Friday. Was quite good. I liked Jeremy hardy trying out his Scottish accent and ranting about Toksvig leaving them to form a political party based on complaining, or similar.

  19. Decent article. Saw this as the latest comment:

"What's wrong with having a compulsory cycling test? I believe many of the revered European cycling countries have them. I think they're a good idea. Confidence is the most important aspect to staying safe and a test and learning for it will improve that. I also believe it would increase cycling rates."

Which seemed to back up the point of the article, people spouting stuff as fact without having researched, so I had to ask:

"I'm intrigued as to which European cycling countries... I've cycled in Denmark, the Netherlands, and France, and none require a test / licence. Friends have cycled in Germany, Spain and Italy with similarly no such requirement. A quick Google isn't helping me. I knew that Switzerland had some rule or other, and Google came to the rescue there, they used to have an insurance sticker you had to display. Used to. It was phased out in 2012. Please help me out here, which European countries have a compulsory cycling test?"

I think that in the Netherlands there is cycle training at school and as part of that there's a test the children do. But it is more of a "demonstration of competence" test - the child will have ridden their bike to school to do the test, and will ride it home again however well or badly they've done...

  21. Yeah, he's clarified that he means it should be taught in schools to make everyone more aware of cycling. So not a 'test' as such that gives you the right to cycle.

I'd take issue with the statement "Confidence is the most important aspect to staying safe".

  25. See, that's brilliant (but if they don't pass the test they're also not banned from cycling).

Surely all that's needed is to make cycling lessons compulsory for motorists (and on a busy road)

    Posted 8 years ago #
  27. Have long said there should be a cycling element to driving lessons.

But I do think putting something in schools would be of massive benefit too. Normalises things, and hey, if some kids start cycling regularly there may be a check on some of the obesity figures.
