I have just renewed the domain name and web space for another year - grand total of £46.98.

I have also added an Amazon Affiliates link on the left. This highlights Haynes Bike Book which is great for anyone doing basic or advanced repairs.

If you ever buy via the link (not just that book) I will get some pennies. CCE is obviously not about making money, but an Amazon link means people could give a small amount to the cost of CCE - it comes off the money you pay Amazon NOT an extra charge.

Seconded; thank you, chdot. The Amazon link will be no doubt feature highly when Christmas shopping time approaches. CCE is developing quite nicely into a community.

"CCE is developing quite nicely into a community."

Yes - though perhaps communities? - under an 'umbrella'?

As long as people don't feel left out I'd they don't do MMW every day!

Yeah - boo hiss to the Southside bias!

[joking - I am entirely free of any compass-direction prejudice]

Also (cue slight tangent) any progress on the CCE "shop"?

I'm now living in Fife, (and so is my wife... pythonesque), also Baldcyclist has moved to Fife though from one OOT to another OOT.

Just to help the balance, you understand.

Thanks chdot. I have frequented a couple of forums, not all as open as this one, and one which has gotten so large they took voluntary subscriptions at one point before later opening up to advertising.

After four years the Amazon search box on the left has paid for about half the domain name and hosting costs.

With the gradual increase in members, the amount over the past year is more than the annual cost - so thanks to all those spending money via this site.

Of course Amazon is 'controversial' - perhaps more so than when this forum started.

I don't suppose Amazon has caused too many bike shops to close, and they employ lots of people in Fife...

Other forms of retail are available, but there's only one CCE.

    Personal choice...

Probably less controversial than CRC though I'd expect less "profitable" given the demographic.

I do wonder how many Edinburgh bike shops have gone out of business in last 20 years due to retailing rather then the owner operator getting bored or wanting a change.

    "Probably less controversial than CRC"

Yes, decided against joining on-line bike affiliate schemes. (Haven't even looked at which sites have them).

"I do wonder how many Edinburgh bike shops have gone out of business in last 20 years"

In terms of numbers definitely a lot more.

Not sure if more or less than 20 years, but the only ones I can think of are David's (secondhand in Argyle Place) and Thomas Piper which started in Morningside and then had a branch in South Clerk Street. (I think the bicycle wheel 'sign' is still there!)

Thomas Piper's shop in Morningside is the one I remember. I think the last thing I bought there was a pair of ODI Mushrooms for my Grifter. But after then I probably frequented Edinburgh Bicycle (when its grey-and-green livery was still going strong).

I also remember City Cycles in Rodney Street, when Falcon actually made some half-decent mountain bikes. I don't know if t'internet was the reason the shop disappeared though.

Williamson's of course became Alpine Bikes and Robin is now the man behind Biketrax, though didn't Biketrax grow out of The New Bike Shop?

    All true.

Highlights the changes of names/ownerships - but still bike shops (apart from the Pipers).

Good work chdot. Forum has grown well under your care and that of 'content providers'. Here's to next four years.
