"It will cost £3.80 per day to hire a bike from Haymarket."
So presumably can only be returned/dropped off at Haymarket.

So presumably can only be returned/dropped off at Haymarket.
From the FAQ
"
Can I bring the bike back to another station? No – the Bike & Go bike must be returned to the station where it was originally hired.
"Although, even if the answer were Yes, it would presumably mean riding to Stirling which is the only other Bike and Go station in Scotland.
Incidentally I just checked current bike availability for Stirling.

Do I need to wear a helmet? We recommend that you consider wearing a helmet, but this is not a legal requirement in the UK.
"Quite well worded I think.

I noticed these in Stirling when we were there recently. They already seem to have bike scheme anyway.

Having a single pick-up/drop-off point could limit the appeal of this. I hope that doesn't negatively affect the chances of getting a city-wide hire scheme.

Half price subscription (£5 not £10) because of the inconvenience of the Winchburgh Tunnel works. http://www.scotrail.co.uk/advice-cyclists-during-winchburgh-tunnel-engineering-works

"Bike & Go
Instead of taking your own cycle, you may consider using the new Bike & Go facilities at Haymarket station. This will be introduced from 15 June and means you can avoid the hassle of taking a bike on a crowded train during the Winchburgh Tunnel closure. We are offering a half price subscription of £5, with your first rental absolutely free. Usual subscription fee is £10 and usual rental fee is £3.80 for a 24 hour period. Offer is available until 26 July 2015.
Visit http://www.bikeandgo.co.uk, select the Railcard ½ subscription option and enter promo code Bike15."

I think £3.80 / day is pretty good value. If I was a tourist wanting to explore the town for a day or two I would be delighted with those prices.

Especially since it undercuts the already cheap bus DaySaver by 20p.
Shut up and take less of my money, as Fry says on the internet.

I'd like to hear how this goes. The area outside Haymarket Station does not look inviting.
Posted 8 years ago # -
Yeah I'm not sure I'd be encouraging folk to ride around Haymarket as it is but perhaps that will get the council to fix the junction...
No Waverley? I guess that because its a NR station.

Its quite hard to find the page which informs us how to hire bikes.
I had to Tweet Scotrail.
You have to go to the front page for Scotrail.
Then click on the Winchburgh disruption page.
Then click on Info for Cyclists.
Finally click the Bike and Go link.
So not very well advertised.

Presumably you'd need some sort of railcard to waft at them to get away with using the promo code when you turn up for a bike?
Posted 8 years ago # -
So, has anybody? Did anybody? I saw them last night in a fetching shade of red but they were all lined up neatly for display and looked unused.

A PIONEERING Boris Bikes-style scheme has got off to a slow start – but it has been tipped to pick up speed soon.
With a promotional campaign in the pipeline and a positive reaction from cycling experts, the team behind Haymarket station’s Bike & Go service hope commuters will soon be switching to two wheels in their droves.

"the bikes’ weight – which he estimated at between 25 to 28 kilos"
In the name of the wee man!
I'm keen to know what a cycling expert is though. I suppose it's the opposite of the EEN commenters, who remain unaware of the invention of raincoats and geared bicycles.

"the bikes’ weight – which he estimated at between 25 to 28 kilos"
That seems about right, perhaps with a bit of bias:
Boris bikes are 23kg, Velib 22.5kg, and they're fine for getting around.Posted 8 years ago # -
I'm guessing that this comment on the EEN article is by someone here. A lot of detail abort the bike specs:
"I went to have a look at the bikes to see what they were like.
Firstly the article mentions gears and I can confirm they are present, they are a nexus hub made by shimano. Owners who remember the old sturmey archer hubs may be familiar with such a kind. These can be operated even when stationary unlike derailers.
Dynamo lights are present and after using some on my own bike they should be up to the job save for the lack of a stand light for when you're stopped and lights.
There is a bell on these units too (rotary), it's just not present in the photograph.
Brakes fitted are Rollerbrakes. Kind of a similar operation to drum brakes but a separate unit from the hub as opposed to being built in.
The tyres are made by schwalbe who tend to make tough comfortable tyres so long as the size is correct.
Locking system is a horseshoe lock with included cable.
Only downsides are the heavy frames but at least they should be strong. It's a step through so little chance of bad dismounting.
Saddle is a bit much though, not so much little padding but wrong shape for this kind of bike.
Told by station staff to hire one once you registered on the website to go to the ticket office to pick up a key to unlock the machine."

Passed through Haymarket at 10 and 4 today.
17 bikes available both times.
Anyone used these bikes?
Posted 8 years ago # -
I haven't used one, but a few weeks ago I saw two at Fiveways corner and last week I saw four being ridden down to the Barnton Golf course path. I conclude they are being used.

I was buying tickets a few weeks ago and there was a chap returning his key. I should have asked him how he'd got on!
