A spokesperson for the City of Edinburgh Council said the council is looking into guidance around the topic of Playing Out events, but added this is at a very early stage.
"
If that's 'true' then this is going to take years.
Just what we expect from CEC, but WHY??

Fantastic letter on the subject:
"Roads are for cars and definitely not for children playing on. Most drivers including myself pay enough in road tax and other various motoring duties without having further and unnecessary restrictions placed on us. As a business man I have clients in and around this area and I am not prepared to respect a road closure for the above reasons. If my clients expect me to be at a specific place at a specific time then I expect to get to that place without hindrance unless there is a very good reason and children playing on the road is certainly not a good one in my opinion. "

Surely synthesised by the EEN letter generation bot? Points deducted for not invoking "I am a
cyclistparent too".Posted 8 years ago # -

I'm sure there's an "Actually, you don't." type response waiting to be sent to the paper, quoting motorist subsidies and so on, but I don't know the references or data to back it up.
When I was young we used to play on the
pavementfootway, and we rode our bikes around on the road a bit. We jumped our bikes off kerbs and drew hopscotch in chalk. Going half a mile up the road to the patch of wasteground used to be an adventure. I don't see any of that happening nowadays.Posted 8 years ago # -
I AM A BUSINESS MAN!
And ROAD TAX PAYER.
(Of Webster Place, Rosyth...)
Who also looks to be a serial writer of complaining letters to any local papers in Fife (or wider) who will print his apoplectic opinions. These include being unhappy at the Easter school holidays in Fife not exactly aligning with the Christian festival calendar, and that trying to rehabilitate offenders through community service and offering vocational qualifications as part of this means he might as well just turn to crime to get a free job picking litter and getting a basic NVQ. He also supports the ideas of "crackdowns" on drinking on trains, unless he happens to be on that particular train.
As recently as 30th January this year, Mr Webster wrote to the EEN over his concerns that cyclists "don't contribute", I quote;
I suggest that every cyclist over the age of 16 should have to pay a compulsory levy of around £75 a year. This would then give them more of a right to be using the roads and/or demanding better cycling facilities and might go some way towards easing tensions between motorists and cyclists.
Mr Macintyre stood as an independent at the most recent Kirkcaldy East by-election. He got 12 votes. He mentioned something about getting tough on "terrorist funding" in some of his local press coverage. I hope somebody explained to him that this sort of issue was quite above Fife Council's powers and responsibilities.
Oh and he objected to a zebra crossing and speed-reducing table in Aberdour Mainstreet in 2009.
Oh and he stood as a UKIP candidate (QED) in the Edinburgh electoral area for the Scottish European Elections in 2009.
Nice fellow. NOW OUT OF HIS WAY, HE'S GOT CLIENTS TO GET TO!

That guy seems to run with the hares and hunt with the hounds - see top letter for an anti-car, if far-fetched suggestion http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/opinion/letters/letters-rethink-hovercraft-route-for-green-option-1-3641880
Also seems to have lost his deposit (figuratively speaking) far and wide standing as an independent in Fife council elections.

That's some quick research Kaputnik. Did you happen to notice that the letter regarding his (presumed) desire to drive through Aberdour without slowing for man not beast contains his entire address due to incorrect redacting?
Posted 8 years ago # -
@ACSimpson people that write that many letters to so many local papers including their full address so readily take about 3 minutes to research! Yes I did note the redaction error; covering it with a black textbox to obscure the address but leaving the readable data behind!*
* interestingly discovered this error before when I was looking up the licencing application for the
gentleman's club"sauna and massage parlour" that was a few doors down from my flat.Posted 8 years ago # -
Oh, there's also this gem of a letter to the Scotsman in 2011, which starts, Whilst I will never condone a driver going through a red light, and then proceeds to describe how increasing the amber light phase will help matters (missing the point that amber actually means "STOP" unless you're over the stop line already!) annd then lists the reasons why he thinks people should be able to drive through red lights.
Allowing drivers to do this would speed up the traffic flow and perhaps reduce congestion
I think we've probably uncovered the sockpuppet behind the "alternative full octane, otherwise law-abiding petrolhead" on the Chipwrapper's comments boards!

That guy must get through a lot of green pens.
He mentioned something about getting tough on "terrorist funding" in some of his local press coverage. I hope somebody explained to him that this sort of issue was quite above Fife Council's powers and responsibilities.
He was referring to the Lycra-clad cycle terrorists?

Presumably someone who writes frequently to newspapers likes to see their letters appearing, so might well read any replies.
"As a selfish troll of many years' standing I thoroughly agree with Mr Macintyre. If only there were more like him, prepared to loudly scorn the incomprehensible priorities of the modern world. Instead, my grugingly-paid taxes are frittered away on 'social justice' and 'equality and diversity' initiatives whilst my street's nameplate sometimes goes unpolished for months at a time. "

Not being a FB user I wouldn't know of course, but isn't FB for setting up fan pages for people like that(?)

"Whilst I will never condone a driver going through a red light," speeding, using my horn in a built up area after midnight and I nor am I racist either, guvnor.

"amber actually means "STOP" unless you're over the stop line already"
Come on, any fule know that amber means "rev your engine, and accelerate through the lights, even if you're third in the queue".
Fair puts the wind up up the pedestrians trying to cross so it does. What larks Pip!

"amber actually means "STOP" unless you're over the stop line already"
Not quite. Amber means 'stop, unless it would not be safe to do so'. It would be patently ridiculous for someone to get an amber light (in a motorised vehicle or on a bike) a foot from the stop line, in the wet, going 20mph, and be expected to stop in time. The whole point of the amber is a preparation for red. So essentially stop by the time the light is red.
That said, crowriver's meaning of amber is the actual real life use, rather than the merely hypothetical rule.

A LABOUR councillor who is also organiser of her local gala is demanding a comprehensive review of expensive licensing charges levied on community events.
Karen Keil said the licenses and fees which were deemed necessary for fairs and galas seemed to change every year and warned the costs were forcing organisers to scale back.

"Playing Out report passed with revised motion that a pilot this summer should be free for 20 streets."

A SCHEME designed to help parents temporarily close streets for their children to play outside is to be extended amid criticism the initial pilot was a “mess” and difficult to use.
The city council admitted that there were so few inquiries about its ‘Edinburgh Playing Out Streets’ pilot that not one street in the Capital ended up being closed for play last year.
There are now calls for the scheme to be improved after parents claimed they found the scheme too troublesome to use.
...
"We now intend to extend the period in order to promote Edinburgh Playing Out Streets more widely"

100% correct Neil Lennon. I watch local kids down Leith links and there seem to be as many coaches as there are players. The lads are terrified to do the wrong thing or show any initiative. Actually quite sad at times. I realise its different world to when I played on the streets but it has gone too far. Most of the top players now are coming from poorer countries where they aren't coached or have £100 boots and personal tracksuits etc. Is the problem not staring us in the face??

Saw this on the Womens Cycle Forum Facebook page:
Parking day.
Basically you pay the parking charge for a parking space, thus entitling you to park your car in it for however long, and instead you turn the space into a (very small) park...I like it. Playing Out needs children and I have none.
(Would this be better on its own thread?)
