Unaccustomed as I am

I thought my fitness was getting back to a reasonable level (for a desk-bound middle-aged bloke, that is) and then yesterday I played football for an hour, and it nearly broke me. Worse news, it was against children. I am so tired.

Any other 'should have known better' sport/exercise experiences recently?

Football is very hard. I also find any form of shopping incredibly hard, much worse than 8 hours on a bike

Yep, it's a different kind of fitness.

My first love is tennis, but recently I hadn't played for about four or five months. My first game back had me gasping for breath and my legs felt like lead the next day.

There's a big difference between going in a straight line and changing direction every couple of steps.

The good news is that the fitness comes back quickly.

If I don't ease myself back into running whenever I feel I need to then I usually have a few days of twingey quads whilst my impact-absorption grows back. A couple of years ago I ran down Cairgorm with a toddler in a macpacbackpack with no warm-up and spent the next few days being very careful going down stairs.

Last year I walked along the coast to Prestonpans, up to Tranent and back to Musselburgh. By the time I got back I was practically doing a comedy walk, my legs were buckling under me.

We took the scouts to outdoor "laser quest" opposite Dobbies last week. Being marginally competitive I ended up on a sprint across the forest and was so busy watching my quarry that I forgot to watch my feet and ended up with a mouth full of pine needles and a bleeding face. Neither my legs nor my arms felt right for a few days afterwards either.

I used to do a lot of hill walking, Munro bagging, that sort of thing, but haven't done so for 3 or so years. We do a lot of walking round town - either for just going for a walk, or to get where we're going if the bike isn't an option - but a recent walk around the Radical Road proved to me that I need to get up the hill fairly regularly if I want the experience to become more pleasurable!

It's only good and proper I should seeing as the Queen's Park is 3 minutes walk from our door.

I do plenty of walking, running and cycling but when I take the kids swimming (not often enough) I really notice neglected muscle groups in the upper body the next day.
