    Schwalbe Marathons:

    IMAG0676 by Ed, on Flickr

This has happened to my front tyre on the commute bike, well before the tread has worn out. It's not an arduous commute, 4miles each way, daily, all on tarmac roads/paths, some short sections of cobbles.

The tyre is always kept pumped up to 60 - 85psi. And it's not due to the front tyre having less wear, this also happened to my rear tyre previously - the tread started to separate before it had worn out. I thought that was just a one-off, but it seems not...

Never seen that. Mine separate on the side wall after 2 years or roughly 8000 miles. Possibly because I do not keep them inflated to 100psi all the time.

Maybe a faulty batch if you bought as a pair? Might be worth asking the shop, or if Internet, email that picture to schwalbe?

I had an issue with a 6 week old Durano plus where it punctured, and on inspection it was the inner carcass of the tyre which was coming apart.

I name-checked Schwalbe in a tweet and got no response. I did wonder if the tyre was a copy as it was Ebay purchased and cheap, so I just put it down to experience, and bought new M+'s from Chain reaction Cycles. Thought I'm not going down the Ebay route again.

The M+'s have been on for a while now and been fine, but I can't help feeling they aren't as well put together as my last set.

I wonder if Schwalbe have undergone a cost cutting exercise recently?

I had to swap a Winter because the inside of the studs were causing punctures.

Had an issue with one of my Schwalbe Winters where part of the wire bead poked through and neatly riddled my inner tube with holes.

Can the tyre be used safely if I make a patch to cover where the bead poked through? After three months use I'd be loathe to bin it.

Or is it time to see if Planet X have them on offer again?

You might find them on their website, but Planet X's Edinburgh store closed earlier this year.

Yes, I was rather disappointed to find their store had closed. Being able to 'click and collect' was quite handy (less so for tyres...) and their stuff was very reasonably priced.

    <sigh>

I note the store is still empty - presumably there's just too many bicycle shops in the area (Bike Station, EBC, Bicycle Works, Cycle Service...). The guy who ran The Bicycle Repairman shop further down the street was in my LBS here in Musselburgh last time I was in, just helping them clear a huge backlog I think.

The only thing I can think of is the bike is left outside, uncovered, during the day.

Maybe the pollution in the rain or air has caused the rubber to perish early ??

One more for the winter marathon puncture from the inside. Disappointing it didn't last that long, but they were the cost of a weekly train ticket, so the pleasure I got out of using them outweighs the cost, even if I have to buy a set every year.

I have had Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres on the old bike for 4-5 years and probably done close to 10000 miles on 2 sets. they have been excellent for me. Do the plus tyres offer an extra bit of durability?

The new bike had continentals and I didn't even make the 3 mile journey home from the bike shop before I got my first puncture- back to Marathon plus soon methinks...

Marathon plus have 5mm of extra rubber tread round the circumference where the tyre makes contact with the ground.

our winters have lasted about 2 years each (maybe a bit less) before having the stud/puncture issue. wonder if its worth trying duct tape or something inside?

not yet had any issues with marathon plusses.

I can vouch that duct tape can delay punctures for a remarkably long time.

I might put some Gaffer/Duck tape on the inside of the Winters this year.

I've had Marathon Winters on the Longstaff for a few years with no problems but it doesn't do a lot of miles. Winters in a 349mm only became available last year so I put them on one Brompton. They worked remarkably well, so much so I didn't even bother using the trike.

    Tuffy Tape is another possibility.
