As many will now know I've ordered a Surly LHT as a commuter/tourer/everything bike, having looked again at the bike I'm going to re-frame I've decided my current chainset is a bit horrid, so now I'm looking for a replacement triple suitable for an eight speed.
I had thought of a Shimano Deore hollowtech as on my mtb however apparently that's only suitable for 9 speed chains :-/

Anyone got any top suggestions? :-)

Not to worry, you can quite happily run an 8 speed drivetrain on 9 speed chainset.

My MTB came with 8 speed, but when the cassette wore out, I simply put a 9 speed one on and changed the chain and rear shifter. Worked flawlessly.

"using wider chains with chainrings intended for narrower chains is not generally a major problem if there's only a one or two generation difference. The only problem you might run into is that the chain will be more liable to rub on the inside of the bigger cbainrings in the small/small crossover gears, gears you shouldn't be using in any case. "

I'm also happily using a 9 speed chainset (Shimano 105 Hollowtech with external BB cups) with an 8 speed chain and dérailleurs.

No issues whatsoever and in the future I am part way to upgrading to a full 105 chainset when other bits need replaced.

Excellent :) no particular intention of changing from eight speed, but it's nice to introduce a bit of standardisation in my bikes and it's (imho) a decent chainset :)

For the record my tourer has Deore XT groupset (apart from Tiagra STIs) although it's slightly older octalink one and I wholeheartedly recommend it for the purposes you've stated that the Surly will be used for
