So, I'm doing the Dunoon Dynamo this weekend. Cycling overnight from Glasgow to Dunoon in time for the sunrise, followed by a leisurely morning boat cruise back to Glasgow (the Quay by the Transport Museum).

    So far so good.

I have the slightly mad idea of then cycling back from Glasgow, but I have no idea of how best to do it. I did the Pedal for Scotland short route last year which didn't seem too bad once out of Airdrie but not sure if I could recall the getting out of Glasgow bit and wouldn't have closed roads this time.

So how best to exit Glasgow at 9.30am on a Sunday morning when you already have a good number of miles in your legs and only a couple of hours sleep at best?

You can take route 75 out along the Clyde to uddingston. The route then cuts through to Coatbridge and then airdrie. From airdrie you can stay on the route 75 or take roads away from M8.

If very dry and with lots of time the canal is doable but not on a road bike. You can do it on. A road bike but it is not enjoyable. Also can be very wet on the towpath until you get beyond Falkirk.

Many things don't seem too bad once you're out of Airdrie.

The cycle route to the mysterious East runs along the north of the river on the other side of the road from the Quay.

It's not the most direct way to get out of town, the river bends a bit. I'd just use the A89 the whole way but not everyone likes that.

Following the reinstatement of the Airdrie - Bathgate railway there was a missing bit of cycle route to the east of Airdrie. I've not checked if that has been rectified.

Yes the cycle lane which is little used has been reinstated, it runs beside the trainline sometimes crossing over it from one side to another. I observed it on a train trip from Coatbridge to Edinburgh.

The A 89 is good road from airdrie to the east, not too much traffic and quite straight.

A couple of years ago with a howling easterly wind we took it from west Lothian to almost airdrie then caught train back

Sorry, you mean the Quay cinema. The cycle path is on the other side of the river.

I meant Lancefield quay where a relative stays.

    Thanks guys.

We're dropped on the North bank, so it looks like we can just take route 75 along the Clyde and then head up to the A89

Worked well - I followed the Clydeside path to Glasgow Green and then up past the velodrome and out on the A89. Simple.

I forgot how much of a hill it was up to Airdrie...

Stopped for a 2nd breakfast at Plains from a shipping container converted into a snack van which was lovely and gave me the energy for the last section home.
