"Results of the Spokes online survey of flat and tenement dwellers who use a bike (or would like to) provide striking evidence of the seriousness of domestic storage problems, and its likely impact on cycling levels in central areas of Edinburgh."

Good to see someone is looking into this. I live in a tenement on London Rd on the second floor. The people on the third floor have claimed the area at the bottom of the stairs as their own so there is no other space in the stairwell.

I keep my bike in the hallway of my flat. It does get a little but frustrating. taking the rubbish out, cleaning up, entering and leaving the flat when 'somewhat impaired" - you get the idea.

I've recently found out that one of my flatmates has recently bought a bicycle and keeps it in his bedroom. The situation is not good for anyone!

Does it impact my cycling? Sure it does. Daily commuting is not too bad, but at the weekends it can be pretty bad. It is really annoying having to carry the bike up to the flat when I'm only quickly dashing into the appartement then back out 5 or 10 minutes later.

As for cleaning the bike - All I've got is the bathroom. I've had some worrying looks from the flatmates as I emerge all hot at steamy after an hour in the bathroom with my bicycle. I swear I was only cleaning it...

Where did people keep their bikes in days of yore when tenement living and cycling to work must have overlapped as much as it does today (if not more so)? I used to know of someone who suspended their bike from ceiling via a pulley (similar to the one for drying clothes). Have the back greens of tenements gone completely. When I lived in south side both tenement flats had access - not sure how well cleaning my bike would have gone down in one of the locations. Communal space is tricky if earlier occupants have claimed an area (we did this in our tenement flat in town with the silver cross). In that later flat I would clean my bike in the lane. Am I the only person who still washes the car with buckets and sponges? People must have washed their cars in the street before the outburst of car washes./ power shower things. The other place I have cleaned/maintained my bike is at work in lunch break. I do a little bit of cleaning of bikes at the Tynie Bike Club using a chain wash/ water in a bottle, GT85 spray etc - but not if bike is manky. Maybe the abbeyhill branch of Leith Bicycling Co could supply a hose as well as a pump for public use? [that might be pushing it]. Once you chip the enamel on the bath with a pedal that s the beginning of the end.
