Headline is misleading - extending across the country:

"The new facilities are part of wider plans by ScotRail operators Abellio to roll out bike-friendly innovations in Scotland’s busiest stations, with three “fully-staffed and serviced” cyclepoints – offering a full range of services including sales, maintenance and hire – set to be constructed at key hubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling."

To anyone who has used the systems in London, Paris or Dublin these are not 'Boris bikes'. These are £4 daily hires from a fixed point, while the TFL system is a basically free point to point short term hire.

Dublin is very cheap with a twenty euro yearly subscription or I think five euros for three days then free for first half hour and definitely point to point. Many places to pick up or drop off. The train ones look to be aimed at train passengers alighting then returning to the same station? Specifically to reduce the need to take your bike on the train? But this would not work for commuters unless there was a much cheaper annual rate? Has the haymarket one matched the advertised hype with a shop and mechanics bench etc?

It's based on the Dutch OV Fiets scheme (more details here https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2015/07/07/how-to-get-to-a-place-to-film/)

I don't think they're really aimed at commuters, more those with occasional business in a place

I'm hoping that Abellio will take over the Orange Bikes in Dumfries as a station-based rental for visitors makes a lot more sense than a point to point system in a town of our size. For Edinburgh and Glasgow, point to point rentals make a lot more sense.
