I'm having a problem with a tradesman over poor work who then walked off the job when I explained that it wasn't good enough. He's now threatening to get legal. Does anyone know of a chartered surveyor who could do an impartial review of the incomplete work?

Don't want to go into detail on a public forum, but happy to pm or email with more.

Any other advice would also be welcome. Many thanks.

It's a Building Surveyor or Structural Engineer you need dependent on the work I guess. DM Hall would be a good start particularly if it's going to get legal. They'll have a good level of PI cover in place and also have experience of court cases.

  3. Check any legal assistance you have with your home insurance. You may even be able to strike first, sue the tradesman for the cost of redoing his shoddy work

Apart from that, Dekard's advice is good

Thanks Dekard and Bikeability for your suggestions. It's always a question of proportionate response. I want to resolve with as little fuss as possible, but am prepared to fight a case if necessary, because the work was poor, unfinished, and now he wants paid (for not keeping to contract!)

I'll leave thread open just a wee bit longer to see if any forumite has had close experience of this sort of thing.

We had a problem with windows - the windows were great but ruined by the painting job from the company. Using the legal cover on home insurance was the way to go - one letter and they reduced the costs by the amount it would cost us to get a third part to fix. No surveyor required
