"and do you know how stupid a dictator looks trying to fold up a Brompton"
    - genius.

(I did one of these once - it made the front page of the Chip Wrapper, caused a minor hoo-ha)

Yeah some great lines in that one. I especially like the suspension seat post comment.

A light hearted reply from another dictator...

  11. Possibly fair enough, but I can't think off the top of my head* of a road closed to drivers without warning and without signs due to the fest? Biggest inconvenience to pedestrians is the sheer number of other pedestrians who arrive...

    *and ergo I'm likely wrong

Especially when they were supposed to be kept open in the first place.

"they were supposed to be kept open in the first place."

    Er yes.

Whoever did these captions for the video should read the George Street thread where there is general acceptance of the idea of the Festival disruption BUT genuine annoyance that LH's 'promises' are in practice ignored.

    "

Events promoter Universal Arts has committed to retaining the eastbound cycle facility, which will be routed around their performance area and bar. The westbound carriageway will remain open to drivers between 6am and 6.30pm from 5th to 31st August though will close outwith working hours. Cyclists may travel through the site at any time."

They tell me Edinburgh hosts the world's largest festival
    0:02.00 - 0:04.50Every year
    0:05.30 - 0:06.80It's not new
    0:07.50 - 0:09.50Everyone in the city
    0:10.80 - 0:13.40Everyone
    0:13.70 - 0:14.90Tolerates some minor inconvenience
    0:15.00 - 0:17.00Drivers, pedestrians, businesses
    0:17.00 - 0:17.75BUT NOT ME
    0:18.25 - 0:18.75Cyclists must be exempt
0:19.10 - 0:22.00Why should we be like everyone else?

Minor-inconvenience-toleration can be observed in cyclists' continued use of MMW, despite it becoming a temporary poster-viewing area. It has not been closed, nor blocked, at least not this year when they remembered to not stick a trapezium of Heras fencing across the top of the newly-re-dropped kerb from Lothian St.

  15. A quick festival / fringe road closure search reveals George Square and, late night, George Street between Castle and Frederick, and the High Street (which is actually open at the usual times and closed at the usual times from what I can see) are the only road closures in the city. Tattoo closures are more extensive - King's Stables, Johnstone Terrace, Chambers Street, Gorge IV Bridge.

As chdot says, it was more a frustration borne from the promises that the route would be open, then was simply closed with no explanation or diversion etc. (the road closures mentioned above all have diversion routes, and were planned and notified in advance). And as folk mentioned on the thread chdot linked to, if from the start it had been "we're terribly sorry, we're going to have to close this, here's an alternative", and that had been done in advance, well we'd likely have put up with the inconvenience.

It's a fine line between trying to defend a position and coming across as a whingeing cyclist I guess.
