Sorry if this has been covered already.

I've to go to London in a couple of weeks for a meeting so no need for luggage and wife has car so...bike to/from airport it is!

Is the route pretty straight-forward (from fife)? Google cycle and cyclestreets seems to show a cycle path? from Kirkliston to Glasgow Road. It looks, from cyclestreets, to be through a forest/trees so wonder if it is ok for a road bike? They also both show a route going round the back of Ingliston. Is that the best way?...i'm pretty good at getting lost lol although at least there is a decent landmark to follow.

    Also....

I'm likely to be sweaty on arrival. Is there (free) showering facilities at the airport?

    Thanks,
    M.

There are showers but I don't know how free they are.
The off-road route (http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/45677306/) is passable by a road bike with 23mm tyres - a lot of it's smoothish pine needles over hard-packed ground, with a few mild perma-bogs but nothing as bad as parts of the upper WoL for mud-glagging.
The road around the back of the airport doesn't let anyone who isn't airport staff or wrapped up in a parcel get into the airport. If you take the Dalmeny-Newbridge path then you can minimise your time on the A8 (and assoc juddertastic shared-use footways) by escaping into the showground as early as possible: http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/45677692/

    Hi Beano,

I go that route as my fastest route to work, though prefer the A90 or especially Dalmeny Estate.

You can either follow the B800 to Kirkliston and find the old railway line there or you can join it by turning right just after the bridge over the railway line at Dalmeny.

Wingpig is correct that the surface is fine- TBH the worst surface you will encounter is the footpath alongside the A8 - there will be a few bumps there.

Another alternative is to take your bike on the train to South Gyle and then the path is pretty good from there.

And bike parking at the airport?

There is covered cycle parking near the international arrivals part of the main terminal building.

@wingpig - thanks for that back route from A8 to the airport- never knew about it. Only thing is that there is a gate there that can be closed.

Next time it is open and I'm going past, I'm off exploring...

I could upload a video of the route tonight, but I have to trim it down and use Garmin Virb edit, which is on my home laptop.

    Thanks All.

Phoned the airport 'customer service' - No showers they said. I'll just take a pack of baby wipes and cycle slowly just in case.

@wingpig - thanks for route info. had a look at Google street view and cannot (on several passes!) see where to 'escape into the showground as early as possible' access is. All those roads look to be 'gated' (I presume that's what @paddyirish means).

Think i'll go B800 and then pick up that cycle path. Have a cross bike with 28's on it so if that can't handle the path then what will ;-). Worst case if none of the gates are open I can continue along the bumps of the A8 to the airport sliproad.

@ RichI -I'm ok with the route Fife to kirkliston - it'll be the 'finding of the path' and from there to airport that would help in any video :-)

I'll put it up later anyway. I have a vide this morning of the path from Scotstoun to Ratho Station on the old railway line. Its in fairly good condition at the moment as we haven't had rain for a few days.

I'd say on the section between Kirky and Newbridge keep to the edges for a smoother ride if you are on a road bike (if the branches let you).
