Lord John's million dollar makeover for Gorgie motorists

Sainsburys Gorgie have just finished giving their car park what seems like a 'no expense spared' makeover. They must've spent hundreds of thousands resurfacing all the Tarmac, relaying all the sets and line painting, as well as:

    Funky new signage everywhere:

Solar powered beleisha beacons and new wooden fencing:

And yet they've done nothing to improve the lot of cyclists & pedestrians, despite Gorgie being an area of low car ownership/access.

For almost no additional cost, they could have provided a nice off-road cyclepath along the the East and North sides of the car park on the plentiful unused land, thus connecting Gorgie (Wheatfield Rd) to the Water of Leith path and beyond to NEPN etc.

    Instead we have...

    A nice kerb to bunny-hop:

A nice wee bit o chicanery through the recycling bins:

Mixing up with the traffic (who often don't bother to look at the give ways) in the car park:

Note, oodles of spare land to put a cycle track - only a couple of parking spaces would need to be removed (never used anyway):

Don't you know they call it "Sainsbury's Murrayfield"? Read in to that what you will and why they've felt the need for a large carpark to the north with typical crap/non-existant cycling / pedestrian provision and yet to the south there's no parking, bike racks, bus timetable screens, a large traffic-free concourse etc.

Must admit that I've always liked the bike stands on the south, Gorgie Road side. I've never visited the north side, but does seem myopic not to provide similar facilities at the north entrance.

    typical crap

What do you mean? Here are the bike racks for Murrayfielders, lovingly tucked out of the way next to a wall so that people won't trip over them.

"done nothing to improve the lot of cyclists & pedestrians"

    Presume Belisha Beacons are new!

Wheatfield Rd access still atrocious - but kerb and puddles (usually bigger) presumably belong to CEC?

The recycling area remains absurd - bad sightlines and often glass around it.

Wonder if Sainsbury needed/got planning permission.

Unfortunately it demonstrates the supermarkets' motoring mindset, but also seems to show that CEC has no interest in encouraging 'ActiveTravel' or maybe no option to influence/demand better.

Are there not two entrances to this Sainsbury's?

Yes arellcat, there are two entrances. From gorgie road quite a few Sheffield stands. No parking except some spaces down the street. I would call this the pedestrian entrance. Through on the murrayfield side is where this big car park is. There are Sheffield stands there too. The car park you do have to watch coming in. You can get out a bit more straightforwardly. You cannot get round. The building or wheel bike through. But probably has more racks than other supermarkets because of the two sites.

To be fair to Sainsburys the Longstone store has more bike racks than every other supermarket in the city put together and they're right by the door.

The Longstone store could usefully donate some to Straiton's.

It doesn't appear to have any intentional bike parking at all, although the improvised alternatives are fine.
