Bike & Bus review & Forth Crossing shut-down contingency

    A couple of items prompted this

    In recent high winds the Forth Bridge paths were closed but a stranded cyclists was refused a space in the hold of coaches stopping on South side and crossing the bridge.

    Obviously there will be some contingency measures for times when high winds close down access on foot and bicycle, and we know that Stagecoach Express can carry bikes in the underfloor hold of coaches that run on some of the routes into Fife, and (if space permits) on the Citylink services to Perth & Dundee. Depending on the weather conditions there is also the train Dalmeny-Inverkeithing

    Any ideas/experience?

    This also prompted me to check on bike buses and how up to date things are with Traveline and my own data.

    04.50 train to Arrochar or later to Balloch and thence to Ardgarten for bike ride.

    The only time I've found myself on the wrong side of the bridge I hitched a lift from a guy who happened to carry a bike rack in his boot.

    I believe others have called up bridge control for a lift but don't know if Amey are willing to do that or not.

    The bridge put on a flatbed truck when the path is closed. Two trucks flit back and forth taking cyclist and their steeds. If you're going north, just go hop onto the access road to the right of the path, it'll take you round under the bridge and up out the other side, the truck waits there.

    I think it waits at the truck layby if you're going south.

    Have also used the flatbed truck as @Tractorfactory mentions. Couldn't be more helpful.

    Only thing to consider is if you have a very valuable steed and it is in there with other bikes you'd want to supervise the loading of all bikes.

    Flatbed blokes are awesome! Very friendly as well and the ones who've driven me over the bridge always seem interested in chatting about your bike and route. Although I did leave my rucksack in one of them last year resulting in the poor bloke having to come all the back across the bridge to give me it back.

    Useful to know this. Presumably

    1) Cycle/walkway closed signage for bad weather includes this information, that an alternative is provided for cyclists (and pedestrians can catch the bus?)

    2) Any signage/information includes contact details (phone number for Bridge Control or instruction to use emergency telephone - which is I suspect located in the lay by area)

    Anyone care to raise this with Amey/Transport Scotland from perspective of a regular local user (which obviously I am not!)?
