I've an inkling of a bit of a cycle in September, probably Saturday, 19th. Not too far, perhaps 60 miles all told, although there are a few reasonable hills...

It needs to be a Friday or Saturday to match the ferry/train times and would be ~0700 from Waverley, returning ~23:20 (probably earlier as that allows excessive time to transfer between Glasgow stations). (Glasgow Central 07:51/21:44 might be easier for some further west.)

Ferry and train fares would be around £45, and it is possible to "miss" one of the intermediate ferries and still make the final ferry from Rothesay - probably to make the (toughest) Arran section a bit easier.

Anyone interested in joining me? We could then make firmer plans, which could include stationing a car at the top of Loch Fyne to rescue the flagging!

I rode this two Saturdays ago.

We parked at Largs and then cycled down to Ardrossan. The ferry was on time into Brodick but they let all the cars off before any of the cyclists so by the time we were off we only had a little over an hour to make Lochranza. Some swift pedalling saw us make it we about a minute to spare. If it's wet then take care down the hill as it can be greasy.

The two hardest climbs of the day are the one on Arran and the one up from Tignabruish (sp?). There are a few nice cafes in Tarbet for lunch. The third stage can be done in a lot less than the 3:20 allowed. There is a nice little chippy next to the ferry queueing area in Rothsay.

In all, we left Dunfermline at 06:45 and made it back at 20:30. I'd do it again but it is no fun in the rain ;)

I'll give this a bump and then quietly let it lie...

I'd like to join you but this is the date for the Erit Lass Audax I think.

It looks fun - ferry-based rides are great. But like DaveC I'm on the Erit Lass (as it were).

Well, the good news is that the Lass is Sunday, so a wee warm up ride the day before I'm sure would do you good...

The lack of sleep before an event, however, would be less good, so I'll assume you'll be saving yourselves for the good lady!

I'm organising a dozen roadies to do the 5 ferries route next month and looking for advice from anyone who has done it (recently?!)

We have tickets for the ferries and are booked on the 1st ferry as foot passengers (the only one you can book) and have heard all the warnings for getting to Ardrossan early enough to ensure you get the bikes on.

What other words of wisdom should we know?

I missed our trip two weeks back as had to get back in time for a dinner invitation I was not allowed to be late or in sweaty cycling gear for.

    It went well.

    Very sunny.

A dozen is quite a large group and my compadres were three in number and had met a largish group with some wheeling of two bikes by one person and the other person hiding in back of a motor. This was on one of the more remote crossings.

Much as I like a clockwork direction you are maybe also doing it the wrong way round? It will be fine both ways BUT a you have the nasty road from Wemyss Bay back to Ardrossan at the end of the day when the motorists will be out and about. Best to go anti-clockwise and do the nasty bit early when you are starting out and just bread lorries to contend with through the three towns.

You could split the difference and park in Largs and cycle down to your first ferry. Then you only have Wemyss Bay to Largs at end of the day. Which should also give you more tail wind all the way round? Well theroretically.

My compadres had the last ferry off Arran booked but had loads of time (did longer loop back to Brodick but were still early) and were the first three walk ons to the earlier ferry. Though actually no one else was allowed on. So that won’t be happening with a dozen. Sorry.

How much time do you have to get from Brodick to Lochranza?

I don’t think I have helped sorry. I know if you are there early enough they put you on first and move you to head of queue etc. I know someone else who took a big group who bought a car space for the bikes. That was maybe twenty. This is for the ardrossan Brodick ferry.

    The big
Ferry is about a quarter capacity but you have the booked spot on the busiest ferry. So should be OK.

I am not sure the other ferries have same issues (but see earlier sneak on story above). Again, not helping.

    Thanks @gembo.

I had thought that we'd park at Wemyss Bay and knock off the mainland miles 1st thing. (There is a wimp's option of leaving a car without bikes at Wemyss Bay on route to Ardrossan and then the drivers get a lift down to collect the bike carrying cars at the end - whilst those left behind sample the local beers in Wemyss Bay)

The people in the sales centre have said we'd "probably be okay" with getting on the ferries, but real life may be different.

I was on a small CalMac ferry to Gigha last week and they took on 10 bikes without any stress. It all depends on how many cars there are and what left over space there is at the back of the car lanes.

The 1st ferry to Arran is the concern but we'll just get there early and take our chances. If it all goes Pete Tong we at least won't be stranded. For the later ferries, if we don't get on the planned one it is only a max of an hour's wait for the next one & which will give us chance to catch our breath / eat cake.

Should be a grand day out but not without some anxiety about the ferries...

How much time do you have to get from Brodick to Lochranza?

1 hour 20mins* from Ferry arrival to ferry depart to do miles with a big hill on it.

Closer to 1 hour once you take into account being last off the ferry and needing to be at next ferry 10mins before sailing.

It won't be the leg for faffing about.

Yeah. Looking forward to the Arran leg. Pondering taking the stress out of it and aiming for the next ferry 75mins later and taking a longer route on Arran.

We'll see what the masses think...

I did it with Mr fimm and a friend of his several years ago. Can't add much to the comments about ferries except to note that we hurried to make the early ferry out of Lochranza and then had a long wait for the next ferry out of Tarbet - which actually worked well as there was a seafood festival going on there and we got some rather nice lunch.

I attempted this around 19th September a few years back.

There were so many cyclists that we couldn't get on the first ferry (clockwise). We couldn't book for the next sailing, drivers got priority (and could reserve space). And if we did get a ferry for a day trip just round Arran (having blown the five ferries timing), we couldn't be guaranteed to get back off the island at the end of the day (see above about not being able to reserve a space without a motorised vehicle).

In the end, we just cycled back to Edinburgh from Ardrossan.

My top tip - bring a car to strap to the bikes to ensure that you can reserve a space...

    Thanks all.

NB - we're aiming for the 29th Aug. The 19th Sept relates to the OP's attempt.

I will note that on our ride there were lots and lots of bikes on the Ardrossan - Brodick ferry.

The ferries are all running under capacity. The big one from ardrossn to Brodick is the only one you can book. The others will just depend how many other groups of cyclists are doing the five ferries and if you meet many of them. Probably be fine,

    That would be me...

The grumpy follow-up report only took 5 years to produce!

Did the five ferries last Sunday, leaving Wemyss Bay around 7:20am to catch the 9:45 Ardrossan ferry - getting there way too early (Ardrossan ferry terminal could do with some £s spent on it).

Can confirm the Brodick to Lochranza leg hasn't got shorter/flatter and is not one to dawdle on, the lovely flat scenic first few miles lull you in to false sense of security, but the big hill and the north westerly wind made for a frantic last few miles to catch the mid-day ferry to Claonaig.

Even with the wind there was plenty of time to get to Tarbert, grab some lunch, and catch the 2pm ferry.

Chose to push on from Portavadie to catch the 4pm Colintraive ferry. Probably a mistake - that climb out of Tighnabruaich is a real slog and left me racing the last few miles when I should have been drinking in the scenery. But it did mean I was able to catch the 5pm ferry out of Rothesay for a lovely sail back to the mainland in the evening sun.

Ferries all seemed pretty busy with a full deck of cars - apart from Colintraive to Rhubodach (3 cars and 3 bikes).
Ardrossan and Rothesay ferries had quite few bikes on them - maybe 10? They others just 2 or 3.
