    Dear City Cycling Edinburgh

It's finally here...registration is now open for the 2016 Bethany Sportive which will be back again on Saturday 4th June 2016.

We are sure this is an event which would be of great interest to many of your members and we hope you will share this email with them. We've been working to make the Bethany Sportive better than ever before, you can find out more about the event at our new website: http://www.bethanysportive.org.

We have three routes this year, a Super Challenge Route (102 mile), a Challenge Route (72 mile) and and our newest route, the Taster Challenge Route (30 mile) so people of all abilities can get involved. All of our routes take you through the beautiful Scottish countryside.

We've frozen our registration fees from last year and to sweeten the deal, we're offering early bird rates on all of our routes until the 29th February 2016. You can sign up for the Super Challenge Route and the Challenge Route for £33 and the Taster Challenge Route for £20. Sign up soon to take advantage of these special rates.

Last year you helped us raise an incredible £15,000 to support Bethany Christian Trust's work with homeless and vulnerable people. We are so grateful for your generous support. Help Bethany continue to transform lives by registering for one of our free places and committing to raise £100 or more. For more information get in touch at sportive@bethanychristiantrust.com.

    Your entry fee includes:
    • Chip timing
    • Food and water stations at various points along the route
    • Shower and changing facilities
    • Mechanical support before and during the event (New for 2016)
    • And of course a chance to participate in one of the greatest cycle rides in the world!

Here is our sportive poster we would be grateful if you could share this throughout the club.
    Best wishes,

    The Bethany Sportive Team

Sorry to hear that Steve Abraham has given up his second (concurrent) attempt to beat Tommy Godwin's (now Kurt Searvogel's) annual mileage record.

Came across this excellent visual showing the times of the last year that Steve was moving on his bike. Incredible.

The shadows shows the hours of darkness.

    He is a legend.

Anyone else booked up for Tour of East Lothian this weekend?

    The weather looks interesting...

    Hope the forecast changes.

Yes, it's not often I keep to the middle of the Roman bridge for fear of getting blown over the parapet and into the Esk.

I finally completed a year of Audax. It's known as Randonneur Round the Year, RRtY.*

Its a real P.I.T.A! and means every month is spent fretting over the weather until the deed is done.

    March 2015, Forth n Tay 200
    April 2015, Merse n Moors 300
    May 2015, Southern Uplands 400
    June 2015, Ballahulish 600
    July 2015, National 400
August 2015, Paris Brest Paris 1200
Sept 2015, DIY Round Fife 200
October 2015, Long Dark Teatime of the Soul 200
November 2015, DIY Round Fife 200
December 2015, DIY Home to Aberdeen Tailwind 200
January 2016, DIY Round Fife 200
February 2016, DIY Home to Aberdeen Tailwind 200*

I made the lazy mistake of not commuting to work by bike between Early October and now, so the last few DIYs have been ... ... a bit of a struggle.

    * to be confirmed. (completed yeterday)

Well done Dave, yeah the weather must be a right ... for this kind of thing. No sure I'd have gone near a bike for well over a month had I just done PBP!

Fantastic effort Dave. Very impressive to be able to get out your bike after a month and knock out a 200 in winter just like that. There must be a fair bit of base fitness still there and a fair bit of Rule #5 applied...

    So what's next?

    Rule #5?

March is the Forth n Tay, 200, similar to our Fife DIY.

So that's March sorted. You'll need to keep doing events to be fit for that Highland extravaganza, and then before you know it you'll have knocked off half of the next one...

Well I didn't make it to the start of the Tour Of East Lothian on Sunday, due to a lingering cold.

However, I've entered the following events and hopefully will ride all of them:

    Forth & Tay 200
    Merse & Moors 300
    The Crow Road 200
    The Erit Lass 200
    Etal-U-Can 200

Other than that, other organised rides (not audaxes though) include:

Edinburgh-St Andrews (on tandem with No1 son)
Ride To The Sun (Carlisle-Edinburgh through the night)
Pedal For Scotland Glasgow-Edinburgh (with No1 son on his own bike)

    Er, that's it probably.

Was hoping to find time for some cycle touring this summer, but it's looking unlikely...

    Borders Randonee 200
    Moffat Toffee 200
    Merse & Moors 300
    Borderlands Roc Treverzal 600

I need a 400 for the set but haven't chosen that yet.

I might be doing the Burma Road (starts near Morpeth) with my mate.
Potentially doing the Tour of the Borders.
And will likely attempt the Fred Whitton but over two days as a bit of holiday.

    I'm very committal...

    I'll be doing:

    Etape Loch Ness
    Tour o the Borders

having done them with my brother last year for Macmillan Cancer Support (for personal family reasons). Also looking at a couple of others, none committed.

    <personal charity request>
    I'm also doing this:

    St Columba's Hospice Celtic Challenge

    I have a Justgiving page:

I have entered the Burma Road, its only 100km and not terribly hilly at 1600m but its as good a place to start as any.

I'm doing the Etape Caledonia this year - entered as a warm up for Tour o' the Borders (just in the sense that I will have something to get fit for / embarrass me into riding more at the start of summer).

I've always resisted on the basis of the dodgy charity thing, but in the end my desire to tear it up on closed roads got the better of me.

No brevets planned yet. I did enjoy the National 400 last year, but otherwise it's hard to find the time to get out nowadays...

It's the Forth and Tay 200km this Sunday. I hope to see few of us there. The forecasting is looking okay if cold, as long as there's not too much moisture=ice left on the road after any rain tonight. At least the usual headwind from St Andrews should be weak.

For those that don't know the route, it starts in Dalmeny, goes up to Dollar and Auchterarder then along the south of the Tay to Tayport, down to St Andrews and back via Falkland. It's a really nice route given good conditions, though the last 20km or so through west Fife isn't the highlight

Continuing health and fitness issues mean I'm in no fit state to ride tomorrow's Forth & Tay 200 unfortunately.

Indeed, unless I can improve my fitness considerably my plans for this year are starting to look hopelessly optimistic. :-(

Sorry to hear that crowriver. But the Forth and Tay has great bail-out options if you only feel like doing half of it.

Unfortunately the cold weather in the morning will also a problem for me, as the cold air will trigger my asthma, which is the health issue I'm having difficulties with. So it's going to be a much more gradual process getting back into distance cycling by the looks of it...

@crowriver my genuine sympathies...it's not fun... I find being religious about wearing a buff over my mouth and nose, and using blue inhaler before a ride, whenever it's below 6/7oC helps....Still, if I overdo it in the cold I soon know about it, like last Sunday going a bit too hard up a hill when it was still around zero.

What a different a year makes...

I bailed at Cupar last year as I couldn't face the headwind so was determined to make amends this year.

Weather was cold but generally good. A couple of patches of ice and some slushy snow but roads were generally dry.

Had hoped we'd have a tail wind from St Andrew ' s but it wasn't to be. The long straight roads out of St Andrews turned into a bit of drag but I didn't quit.

Started to spit snow flakes going through Lochgelly but I think we were ahead of the worse, getting back to Dalmeny as the hall was being opened up.

The macaroni pie was lovely :-)

I'm even back in time to try to earn some brownie points back for missing Mother's Day.

Didn't recognise any other CCE'r except @cyclops organising.
