Would I be considered a cheat if I suggested it was the trees rather than the inscription which I recognised?

You really have to know the inscriptions are there to spot them as they are easy to miss at a quick glance.

Does anyone know what the two ships which are referred to are?

P.S. The bee I was referring to was the one on top of the wall.

    Dunno

It was a nice day, and has been a nice week, with little wind. I have never seen that lettering before which is why I took their photographs.

Ahh, the penny just dropped. It used to be the border to West Lothian and the inscription is shires not ships. So the two "ships" presumably are Edinburgh and West Lothian or their 17th century predecessors.

I guess a lot of people haven't seen the lettering, the parapets are low and the views in both directions draw your eyes over them.

The week hasn't been entirely without wind, Wednesday's North Easterly helped me shave a minute off my previous fastest commute home.
