I thought I'd turned my garmin off at the end of my run this morning, but it kept going and logged my ride into work as well. is there any easy way to crop the trace so that it only keeps the first 40 minutes?

Easy on Strava...

There are tools available online (sorry not used any recently so cannot recommend one in particular).
Alternatively the file can be opened in a text editor and you can chop bits out that way.

You can do it on strava as fimm says but I also use Endomondo as their editing tools are more comprehensive imho. With them you can split or merge rides meaning you don't lose any data. You can then export to gpx and upload to whatever site you use.

Thanks everyone. I guess I won't bother. Appreciate the help though.

I'll have a look at Garmin Connect later and see if I can see anything

SRD, do you use Garmin MapSource or BaseCamp or something like that on your computer? You could take a GPX file out of your Garmin and split it in your map editor, and delete all the trackpoints you didn't want. Then you would re-upload the GPX file to wherever it was before.
I'm a bit of a dinosaur because I use my Garmin for specific trips that I save in BaseCamp and occasionally push to Strava, rather than having a GPS bike computer that happily connects itself to the web without much workflow.

no, i'm just using garmin connect. nothing fancier. so had hoped there was a way to fix it within garmin. I'll just need to be more careful about hitting the 'stop' button!
