Just back from in-law christening in Great Budworth, Near northwich in Cheshire. Four years since last there. Place always had cyclists but now teeming with them but many of the old scunners at christening very anti-cycling. The country roads are great for cycling and very flat. The problem is that although rural the area is fairly densely populated so unlike some of my routes around the lothians which can see little traffic the roads are actually relatively busy. I was drinking Velo Beer from Black Sheep brewed for the Grand Depart but the old scunners missed this subtle point.

Sounds similar to Kent - lots of lanes that would be lovely for cycling were it not for the motorised vehicles of the densely populated inhabitants.

Yes, Kent also fairly flat in places with good beer. I have cycled round a fair bit of eng-er-Lund and there are many good pubs.

In other breaking news, we strayed into the Cairn Lodge motorway service station at junction twelve of the M74 today. The sun came out as we crossed border back into jock land. The M8 had some shocking roadworks last week (due to travel sickness we tend to travel per vias rectam). So we tried the A70 route back to blerno. This allowed for a stop at Cairn Lodge, which I have not been in since the early 1970s. It has not changed. Except of course it is now owned by the best motorway service station in the UK (tebay/Westmorland). This means I can now cycle to get the great tebay chips then cycle home. Will check mileage. Douglas Water was looking canty and couthy toady as we crossed the bridge. I am not anticipating much traffic down that way on a Sunday morning. Approx seventy miles, I would probably add some by going via auchengray

Tebay does good cakes, n'aw. On which basis, Cairn Lodge may well make a useful halfway point on a lengthy loop.

I passed through Tebay this weekend and can vouch for the chips. They must double cook them to get the crispy outer crunch but fluffy interior. Didn't try the cakes but they did look good.
